ManLuv4Clears 7 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 it looks to me that you're only penalized if you take your own helmet off... maybe guys can settle down for an extra 2 seconds and remove the opposing fighter's helmet for him... haha. As a side note since all of this makes sense, I did hear that the MLB will be using a new ball this year made with 100% fresh marshmallows. It stated somewhere in the article that you get suspended for taking off an opponent's helmet as well.

That's what I was thinking when I was reading through the article, too, but if you take the other guy's off it's a game + 2 minutes.
ManLuv4Clears 7 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 I think all hockey leagues should make all players wear full body armor and have to stay at least six feet away from each other at all times, and when shooting the puck, no one, not even the goalie can be in front of you, and you can only shoot it gently in case it ricochets. And if you happen to touch anyone with your stick no matter how minor, automatic game misconduct on the first offense, with suspensions to follow on repeat offenses. Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 The NHL is changing far too much for my liking. Why don't we just give them four minute penalties if they so much as touch another player after the whistle blows? Maybe a suspension? Hockey is an emotional sport. By all means, regulate the fighting so that nobody gets seriously injured - but let them fight. You start instituting all these rules, and the players won't even bother fighting anymore due to the consequences.

Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted January 14, 2009 What a terrible, freak incident. I was doing some research and came across an article where recently, a teenage player (16 I think) died from a collision he suffered on the ice. And going by the article, it wasn't even during a game. Sounded like it was in warmups. Anyway, the kid suffered a broken leg in the collision. Apparently the broken leg lead to alot of internal bleeding and eventually he died. Crazy. But what do you do? It's a freak accident just like this fighting death. Personally, as somebody who left the cage when I graduated from college and never looked back, despite the danger I don't think I would ever go back to wearing anything. In the men's league I last played in a couple seasons ago I would skate right over to the bench, toss my extra sticks and a water bottle into the bench and then leave my helmet there altogether and start skating around and warming up, taking shots and dodging wild slap shots from teammates with no helmet at all. Just felt comfortable to run around without it during warmups. I think only once or twice did a league ref ask me to go and put it on. As for the chinstrap, holy heck, I wear mine like Chelios where I can pretty much stick my entire fist in the space between my chin and strap. In retrospect, that was probably pretty stupid. But I just didn't like the strap rubbing on my skin at all. Other than a few errant sticks and an occasional puck, in the 8 years or so of playing without a cage/shield I had to taken less than 15 stitches in total, most coming when a guy I went to hit lost an edge and fell forward just as I went to hit him, I ended up catching his helmet right in the mouth and splitting my lip wide open. Fairly lucky I suppose.

Now look for David Branch to regulate warmups so players won't be allowed to skate near each other.

YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 get rid of mandatory visors or this is just stupid you'll end up with a situation like how it is in AAA right now... when the tough guys want to fight they just end up mutually agreeing to take off each other's helmets then square off EDIT...to clarify haha...for some reason that reminded me of awkward teen foreplay. Two kids taking off each others apparel before they bang the hell out of one another.
Red Crazy 201 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Take out the mandatory visor rule and this is not an issue at all. Changes are going to happen in the game and usually we all adapt and soon forget about it. Now I am not saying I totally agree with it but what are they supposed to do? Doing nothing could also bring huge legal implications for the league.

Oh, and I forgot to add that they will be adding speeding penalties to players who actually skate with one complete stride. Either walk on the ice or face expulsion from the league. DRW Dominance 255 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 I didn't wade through all the posts but a lot of people seem upset by this. Must remember that this rule has been put in place to protect TEENAGERS not grown men.
Carman 387 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 (edited) Might as well take fighting out. Stupid rule. More people get hurt from body checking and practices then fights... EDIT: Also protect teens? It's not like these kids are Rampage Jackson and benching 400 pounds. I'm 19 and played Junior A, and 5'7 and 150 I got in a few fights and I wasn't hurt and I was probably the smallest kid in the whole league. Don't give me that 'protecting' stuff, you should know give rules to teens isn't going to do anything, but taunt them to break them. DRW Dominance 255 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 David Branch has to be proactive on this issue. He cannot wait for a 16 year old kid to possibly die or receive a life altering injury from a fight to then decide on a rule.

He cannot wait for a 16 year old kid to possibly die or receive a life altering injury from a fight to then decide on a rule. Because so many kids have died in the OHL since 1974... please. Fighting is as much a part of hockey as ice itself. Might as well play field hockey. *spelling Edited March 13, 2009 by Carman

Carman 387 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 It doesn't matter how many. What if another Sanderson situation arises to a 16 year old kid? It's a tragedy. Should hockey players never drive in limo's because of Vlad? I don't know it's just not a big deal in my opinion, accidents happen. Not the end of the world I guess...
