RusDRW 155 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 I'm really impressed with the way this guy playing... It is a combination of brute force and excellent stickhandling I like in him. For sure, he is a bit worse than Dats in stickhandling abilities, a little bit less skilled in hitting compared to Torres and he cannot handle Boogard in a fair fight. However, he does all these things much better than average player. And I guess this is what makes him one of the best centers in this league. I would love to have him on our team. I dont remember ever seeing anyone rip it up against the Wings as much as this guy can.. 5 assists last time.. 3 points this time.. he just seems to be a very talented player who is ultra motivated against the Wings.. HAha very true Getzlaf has proved many times he is just too big and strong for our defense to handle him. Goons who weight 275lbs and theoretically could really put the hurt on if they could ever actually mannage to line up another player to hit? Meh. Guys like Getlaf - lunchbucket guys, men who work hard, hit hard, play the corners, isn't afraid to fight when they ought to (albeit not very well, in the case of Getzlaf), score seemingly whenever they want to - that's the kind of hockey player I like. I'm doubt that he'll ever be quite as fun to watch as Neely though. I don't watch hockey for the "ooooh, the numbers he puts up are so big!" aspect of it, but rather the simpleton's "ooh, that guy is fun to watch!" aspect. That said, I like him. He isn't Shanahan or Neely (or even Lucic), but I enjoy watching him more than 95% of the other players in the league and, painfully, more than any current Red Wing. Actually, I don't think the Wings (or any team) need to adjust their rosters specifically because of Ryan Getzlaf. He is a good player but he isn't even the best player on his team. I don't believe there is any Defenseman in the league better at shutting down folks than Nick Lidstrom, and to answer your question, I would "stick with Lidstrom". I might consider more meat and more edge in a few other roster spots, but Nick's spot would be safe. Although he's showing his age, there's still nobody better. He was always a big presence and could score goals, but he's becoming an elite playmaker now. His move to set up the Ducks' second goal was impressive. Curious fact: the forwards starters for the all-star game this year: Kane, Toews, Getzlaf, Crosby, Malkin, Kovalev. Ages: 20, 20, 22, 21, 22, 35. Kovalev is the odd ball in this group. I know its all shenanigans and it should've been Ovechkin instead of Kovalev, and I don't know about Toews... but is this the youngest all-star starting line-up ever? Why does stereotyping have such a negative connotation with some, it isn't always a bad thing. Certainly, Cannadians in the NHL tend to be more physical than Europeans, what's wrong with speaking of it? Perhaps if we taunt them enough, the league's cowardly and soft $Euros will collectively will their balls into descending and start throwing their bodies around with reckless abandon and start sticking up for themselves and their teammates. That's debatable: 2005-06 57GP 14G 25A 2006-07 82GP 25G 33A 2007-08 77GP 24G 58A 2008-09 44GP 16G 37A Not to bore you with a statistical argument, but while he's scoring a bit more frequently each year, his assists have really increased this season and last. But like you suggest, moves like the one he put on our defence last night on the Ducks second goal are something new. Clearly he's growing in confidence.
