It was great to see everyone again! I am bummed we have to wait sooooo long now for another Wings game!! TMI -I've got a couple of pictures of you and Ms. TMI behind the goal during the preskate.. if you are wondering what a couple of them are Ah yes--second album, third picture, you can see us just above the second AT&T sign on the boards. I think this was just after Huddles shot a puck at my face. Again. Can't say I blame him...

Opie 308 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios was in the lineup for only the sixth time this season and first time since Jan. 6, when he broke Scott Stevens' career record for games played in the regular season. Chellios played 21 shifts totaling about 13 1/2 minutes and was on the ice for all three of Detroit's even-strength goals. Chelios turns 47 on Jan. 25. "Cheli did a good job," Babcock said. "He hasn't played in a while, and he's not going to play all the time. This is his role on this team. I've got to get the young guys ice time." Link Here are Babs thoughts on Cheli and the fact he was on the ice for all three es goals. He seemed to be a popular topic in this thread.

So what is Babcock saying his role is exactly? to eat up ice time and take up a roster spot and cap space? Cheli may have been on the ice for three goals, but in my memory wasn't a factor in any of them. He was however a factor in the two-on-none the Kings had in the first period when Conklin bailed him out. As I've said, hopefully he'll become a factor in the playoffs or something. But right now he does little for this team when you consider how tight the cap is and the logjam we have on defense.
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 I would just like to say after the game, I waited out where their bus takes off at and none other than Mr. Steve Yzerman came up. I got him to sign my '97 champs hat that I was wearing tonight. That only made the shutout that much better. I couldn't believe when he walked up the ramp, there were only like 10 people or so out there. It was awesome. ............. I can feel the jealousy boiling in my veins. I was surprised he even came back after last year. But there's no doubt in my mind that he'll retire after this season. He just has to. No one else is going to take him & the Wings won't want him to eat up cap space.
stormboy 47 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 Great win annnnnd the best part? Sharks lose in regulation. One point behind now. Saturday is going to be HUGE. i didn't realize the standings were that close. s***. we could take over 1st in the conference with this win (though the sharks will have a game in hand). we could also tie for first in the league if boston loses in regulation and we win tomorrow night. not that "top spot" matters for anything other than bragging rights right now, but it's an exciting night...! If you ask me (and I realize you didn't, but that doesn't stop me ), Cheli's role can be summed up in the term "spare parts". Meech is a better d-man, but we need him as a forward too. With Mac out, there isn't anyone else to fill that position. So if we need a d-man, Meech gets the call. If we need a forward, Meech gets the call. If we need both, that's where Cheli comes in. (Meech was charley-horsed last night, and Lebda was benched, so in comes Cheli.) We could bring up Helm and Ericcson, if we didn't have Mac and Cheli, but they'd be sitting on the bench here. Letting them play in GR will only improve them for the future. The future will not include Mac or Cheli. They're at the end of the road. As long as we can keep the young ones in the system, before we have to worry about losing them to waivers, let them log the ice time. If we need them, they're call-ups. I predict that during the playoffs, we will be seeing more of Helm and Ericcson than we will of Mac, Cheli, Kopy or Lebda, unless Kopy and Lebda turn things around, and barring injuries, of course.
