Opie 308 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 I'm so confused why Kenny hasn't brought up this kid. He looked AMAZING in the pre-season. Didn't he have like 5 goals? I've been waiting to see what this kid has and I would be utterly disappointed if we never get a chance to see him play with the Wings. I say throw Kopecky on waivers (we wont miss him) and bring up Leino......something I've been waiting for to happen for the whole season now. Coupke of thoughts The team deems other players that they could lose to Waivers (even though you don't) as more important than bringing up a potential hit or potential miss. OR... Maybe they are saving Kopecky for a time when they feel they really really need to bring some one up. You know like you don't just sacrifice the sacred cow because I am coming to dinner, you wait for someone with some form of importance! And with the team in a fight for the Pres trophy I highly doubt they see a need to do so now.
egroen 384 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 Leino actually makes more money than Kopecky, and Holland has obviously been hording as much salary cap space as he can (evident in playing Meech all over the place, and keeping an injured Osgood as the backup goalie). I believe Holland wants as much cap space as possible to him for the remaining season - whether that is for a deadline acquisition, or to get the GR boys some time... I don't know. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 If he earns his spot next year, good for him. He can have Sammys spot, but he better not pull the Grigerenko premadonna act, we saw what happens when you pull that s***. You get fat?

WingNut 25 5 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Sammy is for sure gone after this season. Leino can slide into his slot if he earns it.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I recall an interview with Holland on the radio a couple of weeks back were he stated that next year will see 3 or 4 guys coming to the team from Grand Rapids. Which guys he didn't say but you can all sumise who the are. My headscratcher is who is going out the door. I got a funny feeling that Hossa might get the nod over Franzen and Sammy staying. I've got that feeling too. Hossa and his agent have both made it clear that he wants to stay here. I honestly think he's more likely to make the right sacrifices to stay. I do wish we could keep 'em both... I planed to celebrate Franzen's re-signing with a custom jersey.
titanium2 867 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 It seems like Leino is pretty similar to Hudler. Gifted playmaker. Great offensive instincts. Good shots. Will only be average defensively, especially on the Red Wings likely because their skating ability is very average. Except Huds is a year younger and has more experience with the Red Wings. I know they're both restricted free agents, but with those that need new contracts you think it might come down to having to choose between the two? It's not likely, but what if Huds wants too much and a team is willing to cut the check for him? It'll be a little easier for the Red Wings to just take the draft picks knowing they have Leino who can fill his role.

Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Wow some of these threads around here derail quite quickly, I don't think there was a single word related to Leino on this last page.
egroen 384 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Wow some of these threads around here derail quite quickly, I don't think there was a single word related to Leino on this last page. I'll give a quick word on Leino -- Someone compared him to Hudler, and while they both may be offensive secialists, Leino is not even comparable to Hudler at this point. Hudler, at a younger age, was dominating the AHL and finished in the top 3 for points. He also set the Griffins all time record for assists in a single season. He is putting up more points in the NHL, at a similar age, as Leino is putting up in the AHL. Leino is barely leading the Griffins in scoring and is not even close to the leaders in the AHL. Leino is a far cry from Hudler. If you were implying we could just swap Hudler for a cheaper Leino and expect the same scoring, you are far off.
