viking58 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Unless the money is going to charity, I really think it is silly to pay for autographs. In December, I payed $500 for a lidstrom signed game used stick and 4 lower bowl tickets, donated by the Wings and benefiting a childrens mental health organization here in detroit. This i feel good about.
Yzersyukstromberg 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Can't believe they're charging for the autographs... They'd be smarter to have him in-house signing things purchased within the store only. That would sound like a bit less of a rip off. I'll wait until the season ticket holder open house in a few weeks.

Valas19 50 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Unless the money is going to charity, I really think it is silly to pay for autographs. I agree 100%. Every Saturday I open up the sports page and look at the little section of who is signing autographs and where and just look at the prices. Last one that made me shake my head was $75 for a flat item. I don't remember the player but that is insane unless it is stated that ALL proceeds go to charity then it isn't such a bad idea. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 In the players' defense, we don't understand how annoying it can be to sign autographs during what's supposed to be our free time. The majority of NHL athletes sign autographs here and there for no charge when they're coming and going, not to mention many, many more for charity purposes. That's the stuff they do for free day-in and day-out, and generally with a smile on their face. To criticize Hudler or any other athlete for charging for their auotgraph when they are taking time out of their precious free time is ridiculous. To put it in perspective, imagine you just got done with work for the day. How would feel about going to a mall and signing your name for a few few hours when you could be spending your time relaxing with your family?

Thats the reason why they charge. No one wants to take time out of there day to be faced with people who make a livelihood off of selling autographs. Most likely, if you're willing to spend 20 or 30 bucks on a guy's sig, you're a real fan. And thats who Hudler is serving. Makes fine sense to me.

I know you are paying really for the place hosting the signing but its still crazy. the one that gets me is howe and his..what is it...like $200 to get his????? thats a joke. If its not going to some charity then im not paying. it all comes with the job they are in and the millions they make.

There is no written agreement within their contract that says they must spend a portion of their personal time signing autographs. Most NHL players sign plenty of them for free, and even more for charity. To expect them to have autograph sessions on top of that free of charge which cuts into their own personal time isn't right. Nobody's forcing you to pay for an autograph (which you obviously have stated you won't do) which is fine, but who are any of us to say "taking personal family time away from athletes comes with the job". That's BS, IMHO. Their job is to play hockey and win games, not to have free autograph sessions. If you want his autograph for free, catch him before/after a game or practice. Nobody's forcing anyone to pay $20 for his autograph....that's an individuals' choice. Sidenote: For some god-unknown reason every time I type "autograph" I keep putting a "Y" at the end of it spelling "autography" I'm trying to figure out why. Perhaps because a good amount of words that end with "ph" have a "y" following (I.E. Geography).

I can't 100% confirm this, but I'd be willing to bet any money that there is no such clause regarding this with the NHLPA. The reason players do these is to make money. Simple as that. not sure. are we sure its not in some agreement they have with the nhlpa that they need to do these? im not sure but if that was the case they why do they do them if they don't have to? and i understand no one is forcing anyone to buy it...thats why i said that was my opinion. Valas19 50 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Thats ridiculous. "Come on over, and I'll sign all the s*** you want for free, and then you can go make money off of me by selling it on ebay." This is not a criticism of your comment, just a general thought. Who in the hell would buy anything "autographed" from eBay anyway? I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who can replicate signatures.
CdnWingsFanEh 2 Report post Posted February 6, 2009 OK guys, I'll tell you how it works. The players who do these sessions are hired by a promoter. The promoter contacts the Wings or the player's agent (not sure which) and contracts the player to do a couple hours of autographs at whatever the rate of the contract is. This may be a flat rate, or it may be a flat rate plus a certain amount for every autograph. It depends on the specific contract. Ultimately, the player has absolutely no say as to what can be charged for an autograph. The promoter is the one who sets the amount of the autographs. As far as why people would pay for an autograph, who knows? Everyone's different. I can tell you that coming from Hamilton, On, it takes 3.5 hours just to get to the Detroit/Windsor border. I come to get autographs now and then, b/c it's fun. It's nice to meet the players, and get them to put their autograph on a jersey or stick or whatever. Rather than driving that far on the chance that I might get to meet a random Red Wings player at a game or somewhere in the city, it gaurantees that the player I am going to see WILL be there, and that I will definately get their signature. It's great if you can get an autograph free, but when you can't this is a great way to get them.
