Redwingsfan18 1 Report post Posted February 3, 2009 I got my neck broken 2 years ago playing hockey on a hit from behind and it ended my career. I am fortunate to be walking and alive since the shattered bones narrowly missed my spinal chord by about a millimeter. Hits from behind are no joke - I'm 21 and my life would have been done at 19 because some ass hole had a grudge against me for a previous play. If anything, there needs to be stricter rules about hits from behind because accidents do happen, I'm not the only one to break my neck and will not be the last. I hate it when ******* like Backes pretend to be injured to get the major penalty and a game misconduct and come back out the next shift. I think that if a player gets a game misconduct, the "injured" player should also sit out the rest of the game to prove that the injury sustained was real and serious. I don't mind the five minute major for a dangerous play, but it's a shame a player gets a game misconduct for someone trying to win an Academy Award. What do you guys think about this rule change? I disagree. We needs to asses penalties based on what you did and also factor in intent. Results don't matter. If the person is fine like Backes, then that's great. lfd250 1 Report post Posted February 3, 2009 Was at the game, and what you may not know, There wasn't going to be a penalty until the guy didn't get up. Watched the whole play saw the hit, had enough time to look at the ref in the corner, look at the blues bench to see them pissed and looked back at the ref who still hadn't put his arm up. WOW. If this is how you feel, then hockey is not the game for you. UFC or dogfighting might be up your alley though. If a guy breaks his neck, you think there will be any blood? Probably not. So if I smoke you from behind, head-first into the boards and you break your neck, but don't get cut, it's just 2 minutes? That's cool...... Accidental or not, players are responsible for their sticks. If my stick goes up and cuts your chin, drawing blood, I get 4 minutes, no question. Just like Chelios' penalty against Dallas. I'm sure he didn't mean to hit that guy in the mouth, but what in the hell was he doing swinging his stick around at head level??!?! 4 minutes, in the box. Hits from behind need to be eliminated from hockey at all levels. If it takes game misconducts to do that, then so be it. I don't like embellishing either, but those kind of hits shouldn't happen in the first place. The only time I wouldn't want to see a hit from behind called (either 2 & 10 or 5 & game) is if the player turns his back to the hit at the last second. That's a stupid play and players who do that are just asking to get hurt. There are ways to take a hit and that isn't one of them. The players used to respect each other. Those days are long gone. I was there too, and just because the ref's arm didn't go up instantly, doesn't mean a penalty wasn't in the making until the Blues' bench showed their displeasure. It was boarding, and there's no arguing it. Just because Lilja made his trademark weak contact on the hit, doesn't mean that it wasn't a penalty.
