I was wondering how the relationship is between czech's and slovak's anyway, I heard the people who grow up in former Czechoslovakia understand people from both slovakia and czech republic because the languages are very similar however the youth don't because the countries have been separated for quiet some time now... and the relationship between the countries are still "tense"?

Wondering if Hudler(Czech) and Hossa(Slovak) communicate with eachother in english or thir native language?

I'm pretty sure that you didn't have to grow up in Czechoslovakia to understand both, I think the 2 languages are mutually intelligible.

Do you see yourself as brothers and almost the same country? or very restriced, making jokes about eachother, slovaks perhaps have some kind of inferiority complex towards the czech's? Just comparing with our neighbours of Norway...most swedes makes fun of them because their language sounds so funny and many swedes think that they are rather stupid... "norway jokes" as we call them are based on their stupidity... and norway, but finns particullary have some major inferiority complex towards us because we owned them as a country, we always win against them in hockey, and they are not good in anything except maybe motorsports

Not brothers..I think cousins is more like it, we definitely have good relationship with Slovaks, for example during this gas (!=petrol ) crysis in Europe, we provided them with some etc.

Very few jokes, if any and I don't think Slovaks have some inferiority complex, but there is a sports rivalry (hockey, soccer..anything) of course

I know and I'm perfectly aware why. but for me they're both foreign and have different enough

accent to make it difficult to me to understand Slovak even though I get Czech (at least when

it comes to hockey language )

I happen to be living in Netherlands and speaking Dutch on regular basis while also knowing

German pretty well. both are quite similar languages but if you learned German only (like me when

I first came to NL) then no way in hell you'll understand Dutch without prior workout. not at all.

but most Dutch people do understand German pretty easily and vice versa.

same goes to Spanish and Portuguese which are lexically extremely similar languages (I mean:

if you pick dictionaries of both they look almost the same ). but while my Spanish is quite good

both written and spoken I can understand a lot of written Portuguese but when it comes to

spoken language I simply give up. I have no clue what they're talking about. nothing. niets. nic. nada.

Only gold matters.. BOY and as far as im concerned you only won it in -95.. with a swedish coach

No Olympic golds... alot of 2nd and 3rd places.. no one remembers a looser

Can't argue with you about the gold medals, but as far as I'm concerned, Finland's as good as it gets when it comes to hockey, especially considering they're the smallest of the "Big Seven" of hockey.

And I think you're mistaking the knowledge of superiority for an inferiority complex

Hudler talks Czech and Marian talks Slovak and they understand each other perfectly, but either one can switch the language, but it sounds funny in most cases (there are some differences but people know the meaning of words in both languages)

Translation :

My grandparents were native to Slovakia. I dont understand much Slovak (wish they would have taught me more), but as has already been said, a person who grew up in the Czech Republic and Slovakia would be able to understand each other clearly.
