Who you would pick for this Wing's franchise, Tavares or Hedman?

I would pick Hedman to succeed Nicklas Lidstrom.

Tavares is better clearly better than Hedman therefore Tavares.

Its hard to develope a player to be 6.6 and 250 pounds.

Hedman and I wouldn't think twice.

Agreed. We have enough offense on this team currently, and due to the Illitchs, when Z and Datsyuk finally do get old, even if we don't replinsh them through draft picks, top line centers are always avaiable on the FA market. The same cannot be said about defensemen.

Lidstrom is going to retire and be gone far before most of our offensive talent

HAHAHAHAHA!

Only HERE you would find this poll favouring Hedman... unreal hahahaha

Tavares, easily

Tavares is a better player at the moment, but offensive talent is a lot easier to find then a young 6'5 defenseman that can play the game. Therefore I'd pick Hedman.

It took me about 0.7 seconds to think of one and oh my god he is already in our system too!

Tavares has 19 goals and 30 points in 14 games since being traded to London

I'd shop the pick.

I like this idea. But who you are going to trade with? Toronto which is desperate about Tavares does not have much to offer. I would consider Phoenix for Boedker, Mueller + 1st in 2010. If it is not possible I would take Hedman.

Well, it wasn't a cut and dry decision, but hell I just don't see how Tavares would realistically work with the Red Wings, whereas I would see Hedman fitting in considering current depth. Although the more I think about it, we don't have a definite top 6 forward prospect, so I see where you are coming from.

I like the idea of having a potential 50-60 goal scorer in our top 6 without having to worry about his cap hit for a bit. Even if we were desperate I would take Tavares over Hedman... most GMs aren't going to sacrifice that much skill just to fit a certain position.

Actually his caphit would be massive because of all the entry-level incentives.

His cap-hit is going to be pretty significant, although he would be a safer bet then Hedman. I just don't see him getting the ice time he probably deserves in Detroit. /shrug.

I didn't say I'd trade it - I said I'd shop it. Actively. I don't buy all the hype surrounding the 1st overall.

No, I did.

Recent history also shows we'd draft a defensemen. We haven't drafted a forward in the first round since 1992.

Of course, that could be used against me :P

EXACTLY!! We have Ericsson, Kindl and Smith coming through in the next few years. The only certain top 6 forward prospect is probably Leino. Then, Mursak and Ritola might deliver.

It makes no sense to take Hedman over a much better player in Tavares ESPECIALLY given our current depth at D. And I assure you, no GM in the league is taking Hedman if they get the #1 pick. Tavares is a 100% certainty to go first.
