The question remains is by how much. Some believe it could be a $10-15 million drop.

russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted February 26, 2009 Hey NFM, Montreal traded Steve Begin to Dallas for Doug Janik http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=268795&lid...s=topStory_main I was told by my brother who is a Habs fan that Janik was already waived and sent to Hamilton, that it was cap cutting measure with Tanguay coming back, plus he isn't playing anyway. Next out the door is Laraque in my opinion.

He told Gainey that if the team won't play him there are other teams that will. it sounds to me like he will be willing to waive it.

russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted February 26, 2009 I'm not sure where you get that from... Laraque on being traded With the trade deadline less than a week away, Canadiens tough guy Georges Laraque said he hasn't asked to be traded, but he certainly sounds like someone who would welcome a change of scenery. Laraque has been a healthy scratch the past two games and said if the Canadiens don't want to play him, he's sure there are other teams in the league that would appreciate his unique skills. He went on to say that, if he knew that the Canadiens weren't going to take full advantage of his presence, he wouldn't have signed as a free agent last summer. http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Unha...9908/story.html

skacore 2 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 According to Andy Strickland, Detroit has interest in Jamal Mayers. s***, I'd take him! he's not overly physical but he could get the job done... best thing about it is that he's not a UFA until '10 so he wouldn't just be a playoff rental

He's gritty and provides some strength, and he isn't a terrible player, but I've been watching him in Toronto all season long (living near the city, I see almost every game), and I just haven't been overly impressed with his play, but perhaps he'd play better in Detroit. I'm in the same boat, I'm from Toronto and watch every game... and I agree he hasn't reached my expectations, I thought he'd be a great fit in Toronto but he's just been OK so far. I think St. Louis used him more effectively and his stats showed. He's a tier below Chris Neil and Ian Laperriere but like I said, I'd still take him with no complaints. I'd take the two you mentioned before Mayers any day of the week, but I wouldn't be overly unsatisfied if we landed him. I do hope we snag some sort of depth forward that can add some grit to our roster, though.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Wow, seriously? That would be downright catastrophic for the brave new world of 6+ year contracts that virtually all of the NHL's locked themselves into. Honestly, I don't see how the NHPLA would allow the cap to drop that much. That would absolutely destroy several key teams in the league and bring down the NHL as a result. It might drop, but I don't see it dropping enough to really affect too much, it's just bad business.
