mjlegend 155 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 I just thought of something today that scared the hell out of me: From Ducks: Chris Pronger From Chicago: Brent Seabrook, Dustin Byfuglien, Martin Havlat's expiring contract, 1st round pick (2009). The Hawks then pick up an enforcer (Laraque?) or an experienced forward (Recchi?) for chickenfeed and get Pronger's experience and sandpaper for this year and next year, plus get a whole lot tougher to play against. The Ducks get a 20-game audition to see if they want to re-sign UFA Havlat, plus they get solid prospects in Byfuglien and a draft pick, and a chance to see if Seabrook can get back on track. Maybe the Hawks would have to throw in Skille as well into one of the deals. I'm scared. I need someone to talk me out of this trade. Obviously, I think it only works if the Ducks bite on the last year of Havlat's $6 million/year contract.

skacore 2 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 Ah, Niclas, we hardly knew ye... So is the focus on Jordan Leopold now? are we going in order of softest defensemen in the league? Nicklas Havelid is gone so next in line is Jordan Leopold?
T-Ruff 47 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 (edited) TSN The Atlanta Thrashers traded defenceman Niclas Havelid to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for blueliner Anssi Salmela. Didn't see the actual thread for this below Edited March 2, 2009 by T-Ruff

AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 Guess that also means that little chat Niedermeyer had with with the Ducks today meant he was not getting traded back to New Jersey. Sounds like Pronger might move now.
mjlegend 155 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 are we going in order of softest defensemen in the league? Nicklas Havelid is gone so next in line is Jordan Leopold? We don't need a guy on the blueline to beat the hell out of the puck. Just one or two more to help clear it.
Guest mindfly Report post Posted March 2, 2009 (edited) I told you, hävelid wasn't coming to detroit... LOL "- It's going to be fun to come to a team with the goal to win the Stanley Cup. In Atlanta the goal was to get out of your own zone, says Hävelid" Edited March 2, 2009 by mindfly

P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 For the record, I've got no idea who Annsi Samela is. Anssi Salmela. He's a 24 years old Finnish defenceman who's in his first season in NHL. In Finnish league his upsides were checking and attacking and that caused some penalty and defencive troubles. This season he's played 17 games in NJ and 36 games in AHL (where he scored 23 points). Very simple deadline deal, as Havelid can play now and will be a free agent, while Salmela might develop into a good NHL player. He should get playing time in Atlanta. Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 So kind of analogous to moving Jakub Kindl? That is a comparison I can wrap my simple mind around. If so, well, good for you NJ, but not a deal that would've made sense for Detroit.
Grim 5 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 thank goodness it was not Pronger headed to Jersey... they already have a formidable team in NJ, moreso now that Brodeur is back. if they somehow dig up a replacement for Scott Steven's role, look out! NJD is the team to beat in the East in my book.
Guest DetroitBoy313 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 NJD is the team to beat in the East in my book. I totally 100% agree!!! With Brodeur back,I think they are very dangerous.I hate to switch the subject a little but I think this will be another "hot goalie" playoff run. That is why I am scared s***less of Vancouver and Columbus Mason and Luongo scare the crap out of me. zenway9 1 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 With the play of Brodeur since he's been back and the aquisition of Havelid (and the possibility of more boost on the blue line in the next couple days), I believe the Devils will be the Eastern Conference champs. Jersey Wing 1,521 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 My impression of this trade is depth pure and simple. I'd hoped the Devils would have looked at a more offensive minded outlet passing specialist like Jordan Leopold (and there are still one and a half days left to deal) but Havelid does give you depth and can help rest guys for 2 or 3 games before the playoffs start. Give Oduya and Martin and Mottau a few nights off. Havelid isn't particularly big or strong or offensively gifted so I'd say just a solid depth pick up. GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 Damn, Havelid was the one player I truly wanted at the deadline. The Devils are the best team in the East and this only adds to it.

Pronger is not what he used to be, serviceable but a shadow of his former self.
