Wingaling

Wings "Boring" brand of Hockey?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Unless your a fan, the style the Wings play can be boring to watch, if you ask a Devils fan about their style, they'll tell you it's exciting too. Sure they score goals, that doesnt make it exciting. Ovechkin's goals are exciting, Zetterbergs behind the back pass to Datsyuk for a tap in was exciting, the Wings dont do it often. I love watching the games even without the physical play because I grew up loving them, and still enjoy watching the majesty when it works to perfection, but I can see where and why people would say that. I'm sure people will quote me and say I'm not a real fan, and to go watch the Ducks or something, that's fine, I've been a Wings fan all my life, this is just what I believe most people think from what I've heard and read.

But it can be down right embarrassing too when the players in a physical game won't even defend themselves, not even on occasion. Fighting or not it is a very physical game anyway and it's a necessary ingredient for winning and for excitement.

Oh get off it already. This team -- essentially the same one that tore through the last postseason en route to winning the Stanley Cup -- has shown it can hold its own in the physical contests. This season, the team's more apathetic than timid -- that's the problem. We need a spark plug, not someone to protect our "high-paid pansies" from those Big Bad Sharks.

Seriously, enough with the phantom arguments. If we're going to trash this team, we should be talking about the woeful defense, not the lack of fights.

I recently read, on a few different sites mind you,red wings so called boring brand of hockey??? What? Where did this all start and why? :scared:

Who really gives af*** what others are saying....

This isn't college football where opinion rules all (i.e. the polls and BSC)....the NHL has the best playoffs and the Wings dominated it last year and if Osgood and the Defense step up (not to start the s*** in yet another thread), the Wings have the best team again.

f*** everyone else.

I have no idea why Wings brand of hockey is boring. One could not have ever compared it to the Devils because the Wings have consistently been near the top of the league in scoring. Hell, even this year, defense be damned, and they still lead the league by a good 20-30 goals in scoring. I would think the people who said this are new to hockey and haven't seen how s*** was with the New Jersey Devils rope-a-dope trap bulls***.

The team that scores by far the most goals in the league (and lets in the 9th most) is boring?

The same team that has Hossa, Datsyuk, Franzen, Hudler and Zetterberg?

I dare say that scoring a ton of goals has been called boring and dull by many a board member here. (Or a couple that constantly bang the drum) but I digress...

If the Devils or Wild were to score a ton of goals, the trap would still be boring for most to watch. Puck possession is a but a few rungs up the ladder from the trap unless it's your team doing it.

Though, I certainly wouldn't turn off a Wings game because of it.

I kinda think that if the Devils and Wild are scoring lots of goals it's because they're either not playing the trap or they actually are trying out a different system besides the trap. But yeah I agree I would never turn off a game because of it. I do admit though I'm more likely to pass on a game versus a division team than one against, say, the Penguins, Leafs, Senators, Habs, Bruins, or Sharks, for example.

We're not boring.

Fans bitching about how we are because we don't fight all the time however, are.

No lie dude I just checked on the GDT for like 5 seconds and I saw you post this:

This game is like watching grass grow.

Contradict yourself much?!

...to which someone replied...

Sadly I've been staring more at the clock than the tv, timing the burrito delivery dude...this game is awful. The Coyotes can't score, and the Wings completely refuse to...

It is sad when the fish is less boring than the game.

That's all from the 13th page of the GDT from tonight's game, pretty ironic that these 3 quotes were on the SAME DAY this thread was made.

I haven't been watching the game but sounds like I haven't missed much.

I still enjoy the wings.. I just am not overly happy with the style of play they've been playing. I honestly dont care if Detroit leads the league in fighting majors, I just want to see some chippy play.. By no means should Datsyuk be your most physical forward.. We're just to eurofied.

At the same time i'll never give up on my wings. As much as i love fights, im sickened by teams who try to move the puck.. and just cant get anything going because there d-maen suck.

If boring means consistently winning like the Wings do, I'll take boring every time.

I appreciate what you are saying here SWF, however I'm 50/50 on this. Of course I like seeing the team win, but in the same sense, I want to be entertained. I have some what of a financial interest in the team because I try and go to 8-10 games a year. For the money I spend to watch this team play live, I would be more than content seeing a 3-2 overtime loss that had hits, fights, and a playoff type atmosphere than a 4-1 puck posession fest win. It's all about the entertainment value. I don't benefit more whether the team wins or losses. I only benefit if I can leave the game stating: "that was worth the money." To each is his own I guess, but this is just a game.

WTF? Fighting wasn't even mentioned in the GDT posts..

Do you even know what 'contradiction' means?

Sorry, can't see the humor either. And I love laughing. No humor and no contradiction = lame-o.

The GAME was boring. You do know the difference between a team and a game right? We ended up winning so all's good.

And I'm not a dude.

Understood. And even though it sounds like it from my post, I don't take this stuff so seriously that I just piss and moan for 3 days straight if my team loses. It is indeed just a game. Me personally while I like cool intermission/halftime stuff or hard hits for example like everybody else, I came to watch the game on the playing surface/ice. Being entertained by other things isn't as important to me. So all that's left then for me is making sure nobody acts disrespectful towards me during a game to where it bugs me, and my team winning.

So... *shrugs*

I was just pointing out something I found pretty funny considering that this thread was made today and the first page I clicked in the GDT had 3 posts of people complaining how boring the game was tonight. You're just being a douchebag because it actually IS pretty ironic and Electrophile also did contradict herself by basically saying, and this isn't her direct quotes but more or less:

Watching the Red Wings doesn't bore me.

I'm being bored while watching the Red Wings.

Anyways, I'm not posting in here again tonight because you seem like the type of person who loves to go back and forth with nonsense for no reason and I'm not about that. Some people thought the game tonight was boring, it's okay, just accept that.

I'm glad we won. Yes I know the difference, but like I said just above, you were watching the Red Wings play hockey and admitted to being bored. That's it... no big deal, just something I found funny. Sorry to offend you guys!

And I'm not a dude.

Sorry bout that... regardless I still refer to girls as "dudes" sometimes. :beerbuddy:

I'm out for the night don't go too hard replying to me guys.

That is the biggest epic win Ive ever seen

If you watch hockey to bathe in the glory of winning then yeh sure you'll probably love the wings. Otherwise...Zzz.

Actually, the game was boring, not the Red Wings. If it was so ironic you wouldn't have to paraphrase the quotes from people and twist it, it would be ironic all on it's own. The game being boring and the Red Wings being boring are two entirely different things. I know you're trying to be funny and all but it was actually pretty dumb. And yes, I'm a douchebag.

Dude, then stop posting here already. The Wings are not going to alter their winning formula to appease a bunch of teenagers on a message board. If that gets your panties in a bunch, oh well, life's life.

Yes, that's exactly why.

"The glory of winning" clearly isn't enough for you (unless I'm somehow misreading your statement, "If you watch hockey to bathe in the glory of winning then yeh sure you'll probably love the wings. Otherwise...Zzz"). Unfortunately, what you're looking for -- a big physical game, lots of scraps, lots of "intangibles" -- doesn't exactly constitute a cornerstone of Red Wings hockey today, and no amount of pissing and moaning is going to change that.
