Hossa out against Flames, Conklin to start

Recommended Posts

Let's hope that the offense picks it up against the Flames. The Wings will need to play aggressive and capitalize on scoring chances when they get them if they want to beat the Flames.

Update from Wednesday's practice: Marian Hossa said his neck is still a little stiff, so he won't play Thursday against Calgary. He is hoping to return for Saturday's game in St. Louis, which ironically is where he was injured on March 3.

Coach Mike Babcock said Ty Conklin will start in goal Thursday. He has won 13 straight starts at home, prompting Babcock to alter his rotation, for the time being, and use Conklin at home and Chris Osgood on the road. He said Osgood would start in St. Louis, where he recorded a 5-0 shutout on March 3.

Brett Lebda will return to the lineup, replacing Chris Chelios.

Here is the lines they used:

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Cleary

Hudler-Filppula-Franzen (Hossa working in)

Holmstrom-Kopecky-Samuelsson

Meech-Draper-Maltby

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Kronwall-Stuart

Ericsson-Lebda

Chelios

Conklin (starting)

Osgood

Expect them to mix up their defense pairings throughout the game, like they did Tuesday.

Too bad Hossa is out. But I'd rather him get 100% before the playoffs. There's really no point in pushing him when we're pretty much locked for #2 in the division.

I think we're locked for #1 in the division. & I think we have a good chance of being #1 in the conference & #1 in the league as well.

Not that I'd push Hossa back sooner than he should be to get to those spots, I think we have a chance either way. I wouldn't call us a lock for #2 anything.

I think San Jose will get the conference, and us ending up as #2 in the league and conference. Although I want us to be #1, I think its good to let SJS be the #1 seed and facing a hot #8 seed, as we have had the mispleasure of doing so many times. Still I treasure home-ice advantage the most, so here's to a final push that will ease our woes going in. :)

yeah, i mean obviously i'd like hossa to be back--we could use the offense vs. calgary (plus he's on my fantasy team :P ) but at this point i'd rather make sure he's 100% healthy and take no risks in getting re-injured this close to the playoffs.

i'm fine with the new goalie rotation system--especially if it means we see conks against the flames on thursday.

this may have been discussed elsewhere, but is homer on the 3rd line just until he gets back into better game shape? i just don't see him having as big of an impact with sammy and kopy--plus i just love seeing the DHZ line out there. i'm guessing they're just keeping his minutes down and trying to lower the amount of abuse he takes right now...also, fitting that he got a goalie interference call his fist game back.

I'm not sure what to say here. They don't play as many tough teams as the Wings do down the stretch. Their last three games are with teams that won't make the playoffs. The Wings have not been dominating enough to convince me they can pull off two additional wins over the Sharks.

I dunno to where put it but since various streams are down lately, I think, it may help many:

http://www.hockeystreams.com/

You need to open your wallets but quality is solid and you'll get pre and aftergame stuff usually not available in those sopcast-tvu player streams.

That sucks, I'm going to the game tomorrow. No Hossa. Of course I'm kidding, I want #81 to come back when he's healthy, but the last game I went to (Dallas), Zetterberg was out. Looks like my chances of seeing the Big 3 in a live game this year are slimming down.

Yeupp. I'd just as soon he'd stay out for now. Even if he does decide to come back and play against the Blues, I'm thinking or would like to think the refs will have his injury in the back of their minds and maybe be a little over-protective of him if he does play. I can dream, eh?

Locked for #2 in the division? Am I missing something here? I'm glad to see Lebda back in and Chelios out

I think it's pretty obvious he meant the conference, not division.

Nope - the Sharks only have 5/17 games remaining vs. PO teams (as of today's standings). Don't see it happening because our division-heavy schedule has many more teams fighting for POs/PO positioning. No matter, don't mind being the 2 seed UNLESS we have a game 7 of the SCF in the Tank - then I'll be rethinking this....

We're paying this guy $7.4m for the season and he won't even risk his neurological well-being to play in this game? Bah humbug!

We could never play the SCF in the Tank, just the WCF ;)

Who knows. A move to the East and maybe it happens.

Anyways, Hossa does need the rest. Hopefully the Wings are up for the challenge.
