Hasek may do a comeback - in Russia (KHL)

With Dom, you never know. He might have an agenda going on (hint: 2012 Olympics?), but with him it could just be boredom.

He could probably still play, if he felt like it. I always thought they pulled the plug too soon on him in the playoffs last season, but he let it go and so did I.

still crazy after all these years

Hasek says he’s heard about some of the offers but hasn’t even begun considering them. He is currently involved in building the first-ever Czech Hockey Hall of Fame and says this, as well as other business activities, have kept him busy enough.

“I will sit down to think about these offers in the summer,” Hasek told Czech reporters.

He said he would be fit if he decides to return: “I’m healthy now, no aches, no pains, and if I decide to return, I’d just get back to my training regimen,” he said.

Besides, he plays defence on an All-Star team, led by Czech actor Martin Dejdar. This squad takes on all challengers in games for charities.

“We played last weekend at Pisek (Southern Bohemia,” said Hasek, “and it was a hoot.”

He should just come play for the Wings again next year, it couldn't be anything worse than this year, and it would be cheaper impossibly. Bring Jagr.

There's a lot of room for worse, and f*** no to Jagr.

<<< see my avatar. I would bring Dom back just to light a fire under Ozzie's butt.

It worked last season. :D

No reason a player couldn't make a return just for a tournament (Olympics). Could you imagine if Hasek did train for the summer, and knocked out Canada on home ice. Hasek's performance in 1998 was probably the greatest performance by any goalie in any tournament.

"f*** no" to Jagr? O...K. 71 points last season for the lousy Rangers. 96 and 123 points in 07 and 06. Played all 82 games the last three seasons. Quality player. Anyway the main reason I said that is he's buds with Hasek and isn't Omsk his team in the K? I dunno.

Edit: btw I'm having a tough time with that translation hearing Dominik use the phrase "It was a hoot."

I would love to see that (again). And I believe his performance in Nagano cemented any doubt that Dom was, in fact, the best goalie the world has ever seen. It was stunning to watch... and thrilling.

Two Gold Medals and two Stanley Cups. I like it. Come on back, Dom.

I know a lot of people here love this guy, but personally, I have had it with him. Retire already. Take your stupid clothing store and your groin and all your Brett Farve (yes, that is how it is spelled) crap and just try and live the rest of your life out of the spotlight. PLEASE.

Hasek is a once in a lifetime athlete, this man was born to play goal. He is no Bret Favre, yawn, some human that decided he wanted football, came back and did absolutely nothing in one season before retiring for good. Hasek is a freak that used his physical abnormalities the best he could, and presses on and succeeds despite his injury hurdles. Forsberg tried, and failed. Yeah, at 45 Dom doesn't play like a 28 year old. But he can still play. In two seasons in Detroit the Wings made the Final Four and then won the Cup. For a man his age to be able to still be relevant in the NHL is mind-boggling for a goaltender. Slag his play all you can but his GAA has hovered around 2.10 since the lockout, when it hovers around 3.00 maybe you can tell him to retire but he gets the job done pretty well at an age most players are collecting pension. People tout Brodeur who had lousy save percentages his first ten seasons as the second coming yet Hasek, seven years older, the all-time career league-leader in save percentage, gets labeled "washed-up" because he can't get .910/.920 on a team where he faces 20 shots a game against on a regular basis. Show me any goalie on a team that gives up as few shots as the Wings that has had a decent save percentage...it just doesn't happen. People complain he had only a .902 save percentage in '08, a year he faced an average of 21 shots against per game, ridiculously low. In order to have a .920 save percentage, slightly below his career average, his goals against average would've had to have been 1.75. When was the last time a goalie had a GAA of 1.75? Yeah, once in 30 years? The guy loves hockey and in an era when scoring is up he has kept the goals against down with help but the fact is he has done it.

Last time Hasek unretired (03-04), in his four seasons partial or otherwise his GAAs were 2.20, 2.09, 2.05, 2.14. How does that strike you? Save percentages of .907, .925, .913, .902. The man finished second in goals against average every season since the lockout. He puts it together, despite his shortcomings entering Senior Citizen status he makes up for it in cleverness. Yes, he looked like s*** at times in 07 and 08 but he has been one of the most consistent players in the league since '94 and his record supports that. 8 goals against San Jose, some lousy Nashville games. This player is a sure bet more often than not, when an ordinary person would be spent (see: Claude Lemieux, Curtis Joseph), Dominik is just business per usual.

FACT: The last time Hasek had a GAA over 2.27 was 1995-96. This man can play in the league anytime he feels like it, much less the joke of a Russian league where North American fans won't see a game much less hear about it.

Nope. Receipts from psychotherapists who have been treating former NHL players who cracked because they couldn't get the puck past him. Dom's being a gentleman and paying their costs.

Seriously, though, if someone wants him, be it the NHL, KHL, AHL, PGA, NRA, WHO, or any three-letter acronym other than the KKK, it's his call to make. If not, he's still got his charity work and the Czech Hockey Hall to keep him busy. He also has a teaching degree if he wants to do that. Personally, I think if "retired" people want to remain active, and can do so in a way they enjoy, more power to them. Not to mention that it would be cool to see him in the Olympics.

Whatever he chooses, he has nothing left to prove, and can do it all for the pure enjoyment of doing it. We should all be so lucky.

Actually, you're not alone in your disdain for one of the greatest to ever play the game. You probably epitomize a lot of Wings fans' opinion of Dom. Most fans tolerated Dom because he came here in 2001 and said he would win this team a Cup. And then he did it. He came back after the team folded in front of poor Cujo, and took them to within a game of the finals for the first time since he left in 2002. This was not a coincidence. His presence last season, aside from winning half the games and the Jennings with Ozzie, was a factor in the Cup win, believe it or not.

He wasn't necessarily done with hockey when he left. He said as much. He understood that the team in Detroit was done with him and it was time to go, however. Call Dom whatever you want, but don't call the man stupid. <_<

I don't believe Dom has any intention of coming back to Detroit. My avatar is intended as a joke, so you can relax. I agree with what 55Fan says: Dom has nothing to prove to anyone and he should do what he wants with the rest of his life.

I wish him every success, even if I am in the minority. I'm pretty accustomed to that by now.

Go get 'em, Dom!!

Absolutely.

Why do you think Ozzie was as relaxed as he was ?

Those two had a great time together and pushed each other.

True statement! They had a great time together, and I bet they miss that friendship. As Ozzie used to say, "We're the sexy tandem." :D

I am glad some people here understood. :)

As far as I'm concerned, he can come back wherever he wants and he could still play circles around a lot of younger goalies, who probably looked up to him as an influence. And Dom, whatever your heart tells you is right, follow it. You know a lot more than we do what you can and cannot do. If you did come back, I'd cheer.
