So BJ fans how do the playoffs work in hockey?

That video was pretty damned funny, but I remember the same things being done when the San Jose franchise was in its infancy. We had Hockey 101 sites, including flyers handed out at games to explain the rules and such.

Here's one thing I think a lot of people miss, or at least don't consider. While hockey is by far my favorite sport on earth, I'd be an absolute idiot not to recognize that it isn't the most popular sport, and doesn't compare (especially in the revenue streams from the fan base that actually keeps the sport and the teams themselves alive) to sports like basketball, baseball and football. That's too bad, but really sad for the cities that end up losing their teams.

In short, hockey needs and can always use more fans. Every sport does, but hockey even more. That's good for the sport itself, and good everyone concerned. And where do we get those fans, if our criteria is elitist?

My opinion: Hey, if you don't know how many outs there are in a hockey quarter, or how long half time is supposed to last, but you still think it's an exciting game on the surface - YOU ARE A BONA FIDE FAN, AND WELCOME! Put on the team jumper (jersey, sweater, meh whatever), and let me buy you your first traditional hockey apple cider. I'm more than happy to explain every call the umpires make, or how and when a penalty kick is valid, and you can learn as you go like everyone else. Completely ignore and dismiss those who say you shouldn't have a team because your city doesn't have winter ice, or that you shouldn't be cheering just because it feels good to cheer.

Oh, and while I'm at it: GO JAMAICAN BOBSLED TEAM!

Well, okay, if you must know, having a job works like this: You get hired by an employer who asks that you perform certain tasks and complete specific objectives for them by a certain date or time, and in return, you get a paycheck.

Yeesh, apparently it's not only hockey you guys aren't up-to-speed on.

And to think I actually stood up for your team and the fans in that video. Now that is really "ammusing".

OK then. Explain the call the umpire made in the game against ST Louis in the final minute of the second half that lead to the winning penalty kick? I could see getting a too many ocotpusess'(or is it octopisis?) on the ice but not a penalty kick.

Ok, that bolded part up there caught me offguard. Then I realized it was flyers, as opposed to Flyers; and it was paper handed out, not people.

Other than that, I'm with you, man. My mom has become a hockey fan, so has my friend Trisha. They keep asking questions, I keep answering them. Fortunately, they don't get too deep into the CBA :D

If getting the BJs in to the playoffs makes more folks in that area turn on to hockey, all's the better. In this parity day and age, any money spent on any team raises the cap. Aside from which, they probably paid full price for those tops instead of getting it on the cheap somewhere like fans of teams who've been around for a while, so their money really helps the NHL.

Go Greek Bobsled Team! :P

These many people in Detroit who have lost jobs due to this economy and they aren't to blame for that, but considering the amount of venom you spewed in that statement, maybe you were one of the "lunk heads" that was the subject of that interview........ Sounds like something a Nashville fan would say.....

Haha, it's a funny video and I guarantee that there were plenty of fans that actually know how the playoffs.

But like many said before..I find it very disturbing that people that shell out the cash for jerseys don't even know how the damn playoffs work. Ridiculous. Hell, I don't even have a Red Wings jersey, except for one that fit me in elementary school.

WOW that has got to be the most disrespectful post i have ever seen in my life. I am not even from detroit and this bothers me. Give yourself a good pat on the shoulder, you are representing columbus fans everywhere by posting here, and you go and make yourself look like an ass for typing that. Just because Detroit is 10 times the hockey town columbus will ever be, you dont have to comment on your city not struggling as much with the depression.

Maybe Detroit has 10 times the amount of jobless people but I wouldn't call it 10 times the Hockey town. Besides the Wings are the only thing in that dump.... Well besides Casinos, Crime, and a lot bums of course.

Good news is once the auto industry finally does itself in you can take your unemployment checks and buy Red Wings gear.

Im not a Blue Jackets fan, but at least Columbus has a Newspaper that functions daily and can afford to put out stupid videos

Thats an interesting job you must have, considering you were deemed competent despite the fact that you can't even spell a simple word such as "amusing." Perhaps the standards for holding a job is simply much lower in Columbus than it is in Detroit.

Nice job representing the Blue Jackets, though. Props.

Also, its quite interesting that Columbus and the greater Columbus area is so great when it ranks the 32nd biggest metro area, whereas Detroit is ranked the 11th largest metro area. Clearly not that many people think its so great.

I honestly cannot believe that somebody would come in here, pimping the city of Columbus, that isn't even a Jackets fan.

SO well put. THANKS. I think it's cool to laugh with fellow fans but when I start laughing at newbie fans, that only makes me look bad. We need to support them AND pro hockey. Enough with the looking down our noses at fellow fans. What the hell's the point except to make yourself feel better for maybe 5 minutes?

Wow. Really? I never would have guessed. I believe I speak on behalf of Blue Jackets' fans AND hockey fans everywhere when I say, "There but for the grace of hockey gods, go I!"

What you gotta realize is no matter what city you are from or how your economy is doing when you are at the hometown bar there is still gonna be some bandwagon Detroit fan acting like a jackass and proving he doesn't understand hockey.

The point is Red Wings fans want to be winners in the hockey realm because they probably aren't doing so well in reality.

So whether you spend your day trading hege funds, standing in the welfare line, scrapping copper, or getting laid off from the auto industry just remember you can jump on the Blue Jackets Bandwagon just as easy as you got on the Red Wings.

I enjoy hockey and I enjoy cheering on every team that plays the Red Wings.

The Red Wings DO have a lot of bandwagon fans. But there's a simple explanation as to why: They're proven winners. People who don't know anything about hockey know the Red Wings. They typically know that the Red Wings are one of the best hockey teams - even if they've never sat down to watch a game.

And the fact is, you know absolutely nothing about any of us sitting behind our computers. The fact is, it's disrespectful. We like our hockey team and they just happen to win - a lot. What's the big deal? I played hockey for eight years. I know my hockey. I started going to Red Wings games when I was five years old. I'm 20 years old, studying to get into law school to practice family law. My parents are both employed, making enough money to maintain a financially stable home and send both of their kids to college - debt free. I've never stood in welfare line. We've never needed any kind of government assistance to pay our bills. We pay more in taxes on our home than some people make in a year - and we can afford it. We're lucky - damn lucky. My family is doing perfectly fine in reality. And I'd be willing to bet if you took the time to ask the posters here, some of them would be able to say just about the same thing for their family.

Don't make assumptions. You end up appearing rude and asinine.

P.S. - Are we at a hometown bar? Am I acting like a jackass and proving that I know nothing about hockey? The answer is no. So why would you feel the need to take it out on people on a forum who have done nothing but discussed their team?

Do me a favor and describe the relevance of ANY of that to this board.

You are aware that 90% of us do not live in Detroit, right? That we live in other cities in suburbs with nice homes and low crime rates? I'm willing to bet you that you would only be able to find a small group of people on this entire site who live within the city of Detroit. Yes, the economy in Michigan sucks. Yes, the auto workers are getting laid off. Instead of being remotely compassionate about anything these people are going through, you turn around and poke sticks at them over losing their job? You're going to slap the face of the people who have endured the auto industry fall-out, the downfall of the city of Detroit, watched their family members and friends struggling to make their home payments - and you're going to use it against us as an insult on a HOCKEY forum?

We are Hockeytown because Mr. Illitch, the owner of the Detroit Red Wings, had that name copywritten after it became the slogan for the city & it stuck. We are Hockeytown because we've won four Stanley Cups in the last eleven years. We are Hockeytown because we hold the longest current consecutive playoff streak of ANY team in ANY major sport. And finally, we are Hockeytown because even in the midst of all the struggle and hardship that you find so humorous to poke fun at, we still make it out to support our team - maybe not every possible game - but we buy the gear. We buy the tickets. We post on the forum... and all the while, we feel the pain and heartbreak of the thousands of jobless people in the city - and we HELP them... just like we HELP the team by giving them our time, attention, and money when we can.

You're right. Detroit is a dump. But even in the middle of that dump, we unite for our sports teams and forget our's & the city's problems.

THAT'S why we are Hockeytown. Don't preach to us about anything. Understand?

:notworthy:

Well said, well said.

Red Wings according to the eyes of trolls,

- We all work in the automobile industry and we all live s***ty lives and can't afford to wipe our asses.

- We're a soft eurofag team that can't afford to play physically.

- Our goaltending sucks, we'll never win the cup.

- <insert opposing team's best D-man> is better than Lidstrom.

- Detroit is the fattest nation in the country so we're all fat.

- Ozzie sucks.

- Ozzie sucks.

- Detroit sucks (although they secretly wish they were us)

- That last cup was a fluke.... and the one before... the one before that too.... and that one right before as well....

We've heard 'em all, trust me

You're going to have to try harder than that if you want to get us ;)

Red Wings according to us fans.

- We're from different parts of the country, actually world.

- We may not be the most physical team but we still continue to win, HMMMM

- Our goaltending has been sucking, hey at least we can come to an agreement on one thing.

- Lidstrom > you and your favorite D

- Let's talk hockey not demographics and economy, heraldtribune.com is over there >>>

- We hate ozzie

- We love ozzie, it's a love/hate relationship.

- Don't be jealous :P

- Remember that time the Detroit Red Wings won the cup in the playoffs last year? Oh yeah that was pretty awesome.

People will always hate on the best, it's only normal. Some people do it better than others. I'll rate you a 1/10 since you can't come up with anything relevant to hockey. I've seen better than that coming from 10 year olds
