Goaliemon89 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 I come in peace I'll be coming up to Detroit for game 2 and was wondering if you could tell me when the Joe Louis parking garage would open for a 6:00 game. Also, I've been told that parking at the Greektown Casino's lot is free and is a good idea since the people mover connects it to the Joe - would you guys reccomend this? Finally, how soon before a game does the Joe open its doors to fans? Thanks for your help, and here's to a great, hard-fought series!
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 Welcome to the boards! You'll find that most of LGW posters are respectful. (I say most because I'm leaving room for the unknown.) The parking garage should be open two hours before the start of the game.. and the doors usually open about an hour and a half prior to puck drop. I've always found it's easier to park on top of Cobo Hall, though. If you wanted, you could even park across from the Hockeytown Cafe (it's only about $3-$5) and take their free shuttle to the Joe. Almost any sports bar/restaurant offers free shuttle services to and from the game down there. Parking really shouldn't be an issue. Have fun while you're here! ilmickeyli 40 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 Greektown parking garage + people mover FTW Or I stay at the Sheraton across the street from Cobo and walk (drunkily) to and fro!
Lovin Jiri Fischer 147 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 The official parking garage would be the easiest to find although it's not free. If you are taking the freeway to the Joe there is an exit that goes right into the garage. Also if you go to Hockeytown Cafe, the parking is like $10 I think and they have a free bus to take you to and from the game and it comes every 15 minutes. You don't even have to eat there, just park and go. But the problem with this is that after the game it's really hard to locate your bus because they all look the same and there will be people and chaos everywhere so I usually just walk back to Hockeytown after the game. betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 The series is seven games, but if you win four before they play seven games, they don't play the rest of them....oh sorry Greektown parking garage is free ONLY IF you validate your ticket inside the casino. This is not difficult however. They have automatic machines for this. Welcome to the boards!
Goaliemon89 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 Thanks for all of your help. I am familiar with the area, as I've been to the Joe the past 2 years for the CCHA Final 4 and a couple of Blue Jacekts games - Detroit isn't as bad as some people make it seem... I've always parked in the Joe Louis garage just because of the convenience and unfamiliarity with the area. I think parking at the Greektown Casino is off - sounds like too much of a hassel to validate a ticket. As for Hockeytown Cafe parking, are you referring to the Fox Theatre parking lot? That lot is $10? I'd rather not have to try to jam into a shuttle after the game since I have a 3 - 3.5 hour drive ahead of me and would like to get out as soon as possible... If I do park anywhere other than the Joe Louis garage, how jam-packed is the people mover following a game? Is it possible to get on it fairly quickly? How is the parking on top of Cobo Hall accessed? What is the price? Again, I appreciate your help.

When I come up straight from Columbus I typically park at the JLA garage because it's really easy to get back on 75 from there. By the way, is 75 open in Michigan yet? Anyone? Casey 145 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 Welcome! When I come up straight from Columbus I typically park at the JLA garage because it's really easy to get back on 75 from there. By the way, is 75 open in Michigan yet? Anyone? 75's still gone from about mile marker 45 to 47, so you'll need another way. I've parked at the Joe, at Cobo, and at Hockeytown Cafe, and easiest is the Joe. There is something to be said for simply getting in your car and going after the game, though the garage takes about a half-hour to empty.
grwingfan 21 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 I have always parked at Greektown and taken the people mover. I valet park at Greektown. Traffic right by the Joe is crazy after games. Easy exit to the Highway from Greektown.

(Maybe it's the same thing as the Fox Theatre parking lot? I'm not 100% familiar with where things are in relation to streets, etc.) When my dad and I head down to Hockeytown Cafe, we park across the road from it in Comerica's parking lot. It's usually about $5-$10, but they may bump it up because it's the playoffs. As for Cobo, someone else would have to tell you what street to come off of to get into the parking garage because, like I said, I'm horrible with that kind of stuff.. but usually parking there is also $10. But, again, they'll probably boost the prices for the playoffs. I can't imagine you'd find very many places that won't boost their prices.. but Cobo is usually really easy to get out of after games. Lovin Jiri Fischer 147 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 As for Hockeytown Cafe parking, are you referring to the Fox Theatre parking lot? That lot is $10? It's right behind the Hockeytown Cafe. Just turn the corner and its there in a little alley. I don't know if its the same parking for the Fox or not.
Holmstrom96 347 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 (edited) Keep in mind that I-75 is shut down (yes, completely) at Clark Street. I don't come from south of the city, anyone know a good detour? Should he get off at Clark and then get on Fort? I hope you enjoy the game. The fans might razz you a little bit, but from what I've seen in the past nobody ever gets stupid. Have fun! Warning\disclaimer: Hookers may have crabs, Detroit Red Wing fans are not responsible for any STDs you get from using them. I've always parked in the Joe Louis garage just because of the convenience and unfamiliarity with the area. How is the parking on top of Cobo Hall accessed? What is the price? As a fellow out-of-towner (but a Wings fan), I completely agree about Detroit, it's a great city with an undeserved bad rap. I have a blast every time I'm up for the Wings, now I'm planning on getting back for an Indians-Tigers series this year, just because I like it there. I've always parked in the JLA garage, mostly due to familiarity and it being easy to get to...however, my last time up, the I-75 closure threw me off my game and sort of by accident, I ended up on the Cobo roof (getting up there is just going up a long spiral ramp from the street). I thought it was fantastic. Easy walk to the Joe, and for $10, you won't find a better deal in event parking that close to the venue. Getting in and out was a breeze too, especially compared to the garage. For what my opinion's worth. Edited April 14, 2009 by C-TownWing
maltbymaniac 13 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 its not hard to validate your ticket at greektown as you walk through it to the people mover. thats where i usually park
Nic 59 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 I always park at Greektown and take the Peoplemover. Validating is easy. There's a bank of machines on the first floor inside the casino, you just stick your ticket in, it prints something on it and gives it back. Super easy. I have to say, though, the last game I went to in December, the line to get on the Peoplemover at JLA was SO long that my friends and I walked around the arena and went over to Cobo and got on there. (If you decide to go this route and want to go to Cobo, just go in the front doors and keep heading up escalators to the end. It's like the 3rd floor and all the way down. Swayze 81 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 Just to clarify about the Hockeytown Cafe (Fox Theater) parking garage, the price varies depending on whats going on that day (mainly if there's an event at the Fox). I've paid $2, $3, $5, $10 & $12 before, and seen $20 before! (for Kanye west, lol) So if you do plan on going that route, check the Fox's schedule and the Tiger's schedule to see if there's events or not.
hoogs 8 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 JLA garage is your best bet, but also most expensive. The people mover can be kind of scary at times lol

Hocketownwest 11 Report post Posted April 14, 2009 The easiest time I have had getting out is the Hockeytown cafe shuttle. The JLA garage and the people mover is a cattle crawl nightmare thats best avoided.

They have recently moved their official parking garage closer to Ford Field. I got burned by this at the early February game against St. Louis. After Kwame that was the best scam in town. Holmstrom96 347 Report post Posted April 15, 2009 I don't like the JLA garage, reason being is that you can probably walk back to Columbus before you'll ever get out of that garage. Also, nobody will let you back out. Last time I had to do a human pick play with a car so my dad could back it out.
SuperCalaFilppulastic! 34 Report post Posted April 15, 2009 (edited) GREEKTOWN! I'm confused about all this Greektown parking validation talk. I've used Greektown for every game this year and it's the easiest possible route (not to mention completely free!). There is no validation required, no cost, and there is a people mover station INSIDE the same building as the casino. http://www.greektowncasino.com/GeneralInfo/ We're proud to offer free self-parking in our Greektown Casino structures. Our new, attached 2,900-space main structure is conveniently located right off I-375. Simply take the East Lafayette exit and make an immediate right into our parking structure. No ticket required. It's that easy! The exit off I-375 literally takes you STRAIGHT to the parking structure. No downtown driving, heavy traffic, or maneuvering side streets. There is always a bunch of open spots towards the top of the structure. Just take one of the 5 or so elevators to the casino level. The walk from the structure, through the walkway, past (or through) the casino is brightly lit with security. People mover is 50 cents a ride and will be filled with hockey fans doing the same exact thing. You have plenty of great restaurant choices in Greektown with excellent food! Oh and exiting the structure is easy with no backed up traffic. Edited April 15, 2009 by SuperCalaFilppulastic!

Take 275 N and get off at 7 Mile. The signs will take you to it. It's $75 to park there, and you can hop on the metro to take you to the Joe. There is no such place as Greektown, and thus, no casino there. In fact, the area that you are being told to go to is actually a crack house. You'll probably get robbed. Best keep away from there. The doors open at 9 P.M. for Game 2, which is Monday night. Start time for the game is 11 P.M. due to scheduling conflicts. Please don't take this seriously.
