1) Boil it to remove the smell

2) Contain it in a plastic bag or garbage bag fastened to your person, under your clothes (they technically aren't allowed in the Joe)

3) Let everyone around you in on the plan, because they're going to be a part of it.

4) Wait for an opportune moment, usually late in the game, just in case you do get caught and possibly removed from your seat.

5) Have all your neighbors stand up to hide you while you throw it.

6) Make sure you throw far. Folks in the front row pay alot to be there, and not to be slimed by octopus slime. Apparently it comes off, or so the nhl says.

Yes I meant more along the lines of did they kick you out or not. I will be throwing it after the anthem.

Jay I think at the joe there are 2 exceptions. Hats and Octopie. With everyone standing up for the anthem, I highly doubt they'd be able to find you, if they were gonna throw you out. There's a good chance I'll be at the game Saturday, so I'll be looking forward to this. GO WINGS!!!!

Basically an extended version of the already posted, thanks to wikipedia:

There is a certain etiquette that must be followed for fans that wish to throw octopuses onto the ice.[3]

Beforehand, an octopus should be boiled for at least 20 minutes on high heat with a little lemon juice and white wine. This will mask the creature's odor as well as reducing the amount of slime. A raw dead thrown octopus would result in a smelly ball that would stick to the ice upon impact and possibly leave an inky stain, while a well-boiled octopus will bounce and roll across the surface of the ice.

After the octopus has been properly prepared it must be smuggled into the ice arena, as it is against the law in Detroit (and other NHL cities) for a fan to throw anything onto the ice during a game. A preferred method is to wrap the octopus in plastic (a trash bag or a large Ziploc bag will do) and then wrap the package around one's middle section to give the appearance of a beer belly.

The most appropriate time to throw an octopus onto the ice is after the national anthem is sung or after the Red Wings have scored a goal. The octopus must be thrown onto the ice surface in an area that is clear of all players. It is never acceptable to aim for opposing players. Tactics are also used to protect the identity of octopus-throwers from arena security. It is common practice for the hurler to ask the surrounding people to stand up with him to shroud the task in anonymity.

Experienced throwers grasp the octopus around the middle of its arms with the octopus's head (or more correctly, its mantle) hanging down near the thrower's knee and then swings the octopus with an overarm motion. Holding the octopus by the ends of its arms prior to the throw may result in the mantle of the octopus breaking off during the wind-up.

After successfully participating in this peculiar tradition, the octopus thrower is left with a tell-tale indicator: stinky hands. It is advisable to bring along a wet wipe and a slice of lemon to assist in removing the odor.

If you do it in Columbus, you beetter have an extra ticket for when you get kicked out

Wear a BJ jersey then toss it. Once you get thrown out put on ur wings jersey, walk back in with the second ticket. Enjoy the Game and Props from all of us here at LGW!

To the original poster, if you are caught, expect to be thrown out of the Joe.

might throw it in columbus, when is the best time to toss?

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I generally don't like seeing the Octopus thrown at road games. I like it as a Detroit tradition that happens in Detroit. I think it is a bit disrespectful to throw it on the road, but to each their own.

Nah, lets them know you're there. Its not like throwing a beer or anything, and even though the other 29 teams and Bettman hate it, its good, "clean" team spirit, no malicious intent.

Disagreed.

In Buffalo, it really "put the nail in the coffin" when it hit the ice, and the Detroit fans (especially in my section) went absolutely nuts.

I was there and I saw it. I didn't really see a reason for it. I just prefer it at home, where I just think it makes more sense.

When I am in an opposing arena, I have fun but also realize I'm a "guest" at their place and I don't want to be disrespectful.

If you do it in Columbus, just be ready for the worst. You could get kicked out. Here in Denver during the playoffs last year a guy was detained by the police...can't remember the deetails but might have actually been arrested. I can't find a link on it right now.
