Will the Wings add more grit to lineup?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I know we have no problem playing the body but we need a fighter to stand up for Hank pavs, and nik sr.

I think with Ericsson and hopefuly Abs in the line up next season we will be a little gritier. Only a little though.

With the cap and players leaving, hopefully we can have Downey on the roster next season as well. Hes still in top physical form.

And here I thought you would go 1 post without mentioning him.

The Wings have been tough this season when need be especially the play of late of Stuart, Franzen, Pavel, and Helm.

Hey, here's a topic we haven't seen before!

Ignoring the issue of whether they SHOULD add more grit (that tends to get ugly), I think there's actually a decent chance they will add more. We are going to be losing a decent number of forwards from our roster ... any of Hossa, Hudler, Sammy, Kopecky, Maltby and Draper (retirement?) could be gone next year, or others via trade. With our salary cap issues and raises to Z and Franzen we're going to need to fill some of those holes with inexpensive players. Leino and Helm will probably be here, but after that who knows? I'd guess if we need another cheap guy, there's a good chance he'll be more of a sandpaper guy ...

?

Is or is this not a topic about grit? Did or did the OP not mention protecting star players? Is or is not Downey under contract to Detroit?

How is he not relevant here?

Look below.

Wings are gritty and tough enough.

Fail.

Thats one opinion. Doesnt stop others from having a different opinion.

I think I am not the only one getting tired of you turning threads into a "I want to marry Downey" and just want to make sure this thread does not head into that direction.

The Wings have played with sandpaper-esque grit this year, especially of late without Downey. Plain and simple.

You want to make sure this thread doesnt turn into a Downey thread by quoting me and then talking about Downey yourself?

You sir = Epic fail.

the days of a dedicated enforcer are over

Pretty much. Many enforcers had to change their style of play to fit into the "New NHL." A guy that can put up 50-60 points and lay on the body is much more useful to be honest, more dimensional, more bang for your buck.

Please don't use the word grit when you mean a fighter. Those two things aren't the same. This team is very gritty! The further you go in the playoffs, the less effective a fighter is. I wouldn't take a single player out of this lineup for someone whose job is to fight, and not much else!

That's Kenny's or Babs' decision. And I'm perfectly happy with it if they say we don't need enforcers/fighters up and down the team. Since it's in the middle of a playoff run though, I don't quite see the relevance of looking ahead in this manner, unless you see teams constantly beating up on Lidstrom or Datsyuk, in which case I'd ask, "where?". I'm not much of a fan of making changes to a team just because of an idealism, but because it's necessary. I don't see the necessary reason for a change in these regards. They've certainly not needed anyone to "stand up for" them this year.

Keep Ericsson up, bring up AppleFritter and Downey and have him teach Franzen to fight,

or

Swap Lilja for Rivet, bring in Carcillo and have him teach Kopecky to fight,

or

just let Lilja handle everything.

esteef

How about we just keep Franzen scoring goals and not worry so much about the fighting. Or maybe we can bring in players like Rivet and Carcillo for no other reason than the fight mentoring and then really f-up the salary cap!

What is the point to pay a guy league minimum to 1 million who can not skate, pass, or score to protect 20 other players?

The money could be used more wisely for a player who is more offensive and defensive minded which is the Wings philosophy. They love players who can play 2 ways, some examples:

Pavel

Hank

Hossa

Fil

Franzen

Nick x 2

Brian

Helm

And I am sure there is more.

im not sayin that we need an enforcer at all we just need a few solid players that can play well and get into the fisticuffs

What's wrong with this team that requires such a change? And again, what is the need for fisticuffs and that sort of thing when this team doesn't need it to win?
