I had read previously that McCarty sold his stanley cup rings and other memorabilia in the past...

he was selling his rings to help him through bankruptcy (i believe), mr ilitch bought them and gave them back

Step 1. Players get replica trophy

Step 2. Darren blows all of his cash in casino, divorce, drugs.

Step 3. Darren sells EVERYTHING worth anything to pay off debts to said casino.

Step 4. Wings buy back cup wings, to save face, return to McCarty.

Step 5. This pops up, no reason to believe it isn't real.

Would be pretty interesting if it is actually the replica that was given out to him (which i doubt)

But if it is true, i wonder if the Red Wings would try and get it removed from ebay or something.

It's far, far, far more plausible that this is a replica actually given to Darren, than it is to imagine it's an ingenious fake.

And this isn't a first- you can buy lots of old memorabilia including Stanley Cup rings of long retired or deceased players. That type of stuff ends up being sold at high-end sports memorabilia auctions to collectors, but it does get sold. And that does include replicas given to players of NHL trophies.

I can't remember who the player was, but recently there was a member of one of the 70's Canadians teams that had his personal memorabilia auctioned off.

I think you're right: more probable that s it s the authentic one sadly.... May be a dark part of Darren's previous life coming on the surface again.

How much was it sold?

This type of fact is what separates Mr. Illitch MILES apart from any owner in professional sports. I truly feel for Darren McCarty, but I have the utmost admiration for the sort of benevolence that the Illitch's have shown to Darren. The epitome of CLASS.

The only thing that makes me wonder about its authenticity is the fact that its on ebay. Obviously memorabilia such as this will be sold to other people through auctions and such but i would have thought it would be done privately to collectors or something like that. At least thats how i would go about selling something like this haha.

You know it s only a replica given to the players.... so i don t there is so much worth, especially for people qho are not McCarty's fans

That's true, i guess im overestimating its worth. Seems like something that would fetch a bit of money but i could be wrong.

I saw Darren and Chelios at the Tiger game last night. Darren is looking very healthy and happy. I almost asked Darren about this, but he was enjoying the game and I didn't want to ruin the moment. I'll post pics later today.

Being fair to Darren, the lockout hurt him substantially worse than most everyone else. It would have been his highest paid year, but instead it was one of his lowest... and the market totally changed in the cap era. I believe the lockout cost him 625k, and obviously that would make a big difference to anyone.

I know there are lots of players qwho have trophy rooms and such, but there are just as many who don't. I never hang on to plaques or awards, and I probably wouldn't even if I were an NHLer and won the President's Trophy. I'd be very happy to win it, but to have my own replica? Meh. If it really was Mac's and he sold it (or equally possible, donated it to some charity - current owner doesn't say how he got it) I can't blame him.
