Oilers-Islanders, 84'

Yep, it was in the freepress today. Come on guys, what person calling themselves a Wings fan does not read every single local newspaper story every single day? If this forum is your only source for "news" that would be, well, kind of sad. Freep, DetNews, MLive. Essential... tisk tisk.

The last time that one team beat the same team in the SCF to win back to back Cups though was Montreal beating Boston in 1977 and 1978. So for our sake let's hope the Wings repeat what Montreal did to Boston in 1978 and not what happend to the Islanders in 1984 at the hgnads of the Oilers.

 I for one, do not have time to ready every single local newspaper story, every single day. I'm sure others on here will agree with me, that is doesn't make me any less of a fan.

To keep with the topic, Islanders/Oilers, 84, but this is the first time since the expansion grew to 30 teams.

It's a good ol' fashion sarcasm off!

 lets compare:

Gretzky - Crosby - Oilers Win

Messier - Malkin - Oilers Win

Kurri - Staal - Oilers Win

Coffey - Gonhar - Oilers Win

Anderson - Sykora, Fedotenko & Satan - Oilers Win

Fuhr & Moog - Fluery & ???? - Oilers Win

Lowe - Orpik - Oilers Win

Linesmen, McLeland, Semenko - Cooke, Goddard - Ummm, Oilers Win

The pattern being, 1984 Oilers to 2009 Penguins.... No Comparison. I wouldn't even like the 2009 Wings chances against the 1984 Oilers... MAYBE the 2002 Wings, but that is a maybe...

And we all thought the unearned comparison between the current Penguins and the '80s Oilers dynasty were overblown last SCF. Wait until this year....

Yeah, it's already starting to get on my nerves on another forum I frequent.... People keep mentioning that this will be the same kind of dynasty "torch-passing" as the Isles to the Oilers back then.... Going to be a very high stakes series if it indeed happens :sly:

Why would you go anywhere else but here?? The fans here recap so nicely.

LetsGoWings.com...your best and most reliable source for your Red Wings news.

This site also is soooooo well made.

Tough to compare the game of 25 years ago to todays since the NHL in the mid-80's was more wide open with a lot more goals scored per game. The better goalies had mediocre GAA when compared to today's goalies. Look at Fuhr's and Moog's numbers, Fuhr's was 3.91 and Moog's was 3.77 in the 1983-84 season!

You're kidding, right?

The 1984 Oilers would be crushed by an elite defensive team of the modern era.

There's no way you could throw them into this era and have the sudden defensive dominance of today's teams not be a crippling disadvantage for a team of the 80's. The defensive coverage of our forwards alone would confound an 80's team. Add to that the fact that we have defensemen that aren't singularly concerned with scoring but rather train to shut the opposition down and it's scary for the '84 Oilers. And on top of allllllll that we have a goalie that trains with a goaltending coach to refine his style.

In the 80's goaltending coaches were non-existent, team-wide defensive schemes an abstraction, defensemen were the 4th and 5th forwards, or simply guys who were there to deliver crushing checks (ala Scott Stevens), and shut-down forwards were a relic of the Bowman Canadians (and most of them were on the path to being today's coaches).

The end-to-end, freewheeling, win 8 goals to 7, defense is for ******* style of the 80's and early 90's would be a crushing disadvantage were a team from that era to play the modern Wings (especially last year's squad).

Yeah the sarcasm was lost. It's been a long day already. My apologies Stiffy, I'm usually good with catching the sarcasm.

No biggy- we all do it. I just found it hilarous that she was sarcastic to you, you didn't detect it, then you were sarcastic in reply to her sarcasm.
