DraperFan MN 0 Report post Posted May 30, 2009 The stats I used were intended to show that they had more balanced scoring, a better regular season, and a couple of the best defenders ever to play the game. Not the 2 trick ponies that the Pens are riding to the SCF the last 2 years. Well, I wouldn't call Crosby/Malkin two trick ponies. They are far from that. They are great players who are indeed superstars in this league. Also, don't forget this is a team that follows up those two with a pretty good two way forward in Staal. Now, as far as your comments about defense. I would agree. The Pens have Gonchar (a better offensive defenseman than anything), Scuderi, and Gill. The latter two, Melrose recently called top-flight defenseman. If those two are top-flight defensemen, than I don't know what we would call Lids, Rafalski, Stuart, and Kronwall. I wasnt calling the players 2 trick, (though Crosby could be 2 tricks, side of the net being the huge one) but there team is a 2 trick pony team, IE, they lose one of them, their team flat line, the 84 Oilers weren't that one dimensional. Really? You think that team loses Gretzky or Messier, and they are just as successful? I dunno about that.....
