Did Pens Fans Threaten harm on Ovechkin?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but did Penguins fans on their forum threaten to kill or harm Ovechkin? I am reading stuff that suggests that, but I don't know the story. Can someone enlighten me?

If this is true, this really takes the cake!

A 16 or 17 year old kid from about 100 miles outside Pittsburgh made a threat. It was pretty much a lark. He had no idea he was doing anything wrong. He figure he was jut talking smack.

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh police and the NHL's security office have investigated a death threat made against Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin on a Pittsburgh Penguins fan message board.

Ovechkin

The post, reportedly written by a 17-year-old boy from Chambersburg, Pa., said: "I'm killing Ovechkin. I'll go to jail. I don't care anymore."

The boy's name wasn't released because he's a juvenile.

The Penguins immediately informed local police, as well as the NHL and the Capitals.

"We were notified of the message and immediately turned over all information to the authorities," the Penguins said in a statement.

It is not known if criminal charges are pending, but officials don't believe Ovechkin was ever in any real danger. Ovechkin was aware of the threat, but did not comment when the incident was first reported by a local television station in Pittsburgh.

"We are aware of it. NHL security was contacted and worked with local law enforcement in handling the matter," NHL spokesman Frank Brown said Thursday.

"We became aware of an inappropriate comment on a message board and referred it to appropriate authorities," the Washington Capitals said in a statement. "We appreciate their diligence and have every confidence in our club's safety."

Ovechkin, the NHL's leading goal scorer, has five goals in the first three games of the NHL Eastern Conference semifinal series against Pittsburgh. He scored the game's first goal during Washington's 3-2 overtime loss in Game 3 on Wednesday night, hours after the threat was posted.

The Capitals and Penguins play Game 4 in Pittsburgh on Friday night. The series continues in Washington with Game 5 on Saturday night.

 I remember that, so stupid. Imagine if the police came looking through some of our GDT's.

The population of LGW would be tiny and sammy would be under police protection.

I agree with investigating the death threats. People need to be more responsible with their comments online.

Unfortunately, it matches the mentality of many of the posts over at LetsGoPens.com. The harder the defeat the more they rip on Detroit and its people. They make light of our current economic situation while forgetting that Pittsburg, with its large manufacturing base, is going through much of what we are, we just have it a little worse.

I'm just glad that there's not a lot of that mentality here, and when it shows up people usually speak out against it.

That is disgusting. You cannot take this kind of stuff lightly. A sixteen or seventeen year-old is just as dangerous with a gun as an full grown adult, if not more dangerous.

I read other stuff on the Pens forum that is pretty shameful, then a another poster will post and say "be careful, a Caps fan will report you to the police". Well, I am glad someone reported this to the police. This is serious stuff that can't be laughed at.

Stay classy, Pittsburgh.

I think its important that you look at the circumstances in which the comment was made. ie on a pens board probably filled with various bashings of different players (most of those against ovy most likely since hes their nemesis in the east). Its pretty clear there was no intention. The guy probably should included a "lol" or emoticon or something but i still think a police report is a little over the top.

Seriously go look through some of our GDT's you will find similar statements. I don't condone them but its not something that should be investigated.

btw: your sig is great

You are so right. It is Pittsburgh's fault. We shouldn't have elected that kid to be our spokesperson. I was against it, but majority rules. It was either that classless kid or some debate champion from Harvard. In the end, I think the kid's Iron City tattoo helped him edge out the egghead in votes. You live and you learn I guess.

I remember when this happened. And everyone has their opinion on it. So to keep things going, heres mine :)

Personally, it was stupid. You really dont want to say something like that in such a serious manner. How many time have we wished a star player *cough* crosby *cough* would meet our good friend Kronwall at the blue line and introduce him to Kronwall's shoulder. But this is all in good fun.

Should the "threat" be investigated? Certainly.

Should it have been put into the media? This I disagree with. Especially with it being a juvenile that posted it and there being no real threat. It should have been investigated first, and if there was any real threat then make a story about it. Comments like that shouldn't be posted for the general public to see anyway. But on the occassions they do, they should be removed from the forums and have the police investigate. Not saying the kid really would do it, but in this day and age Id rather be safe than sorry. Have the police come and talk to him and explain why this is unacceptable and if need be take him in for questioning. Make him write a formal letter of apology to the forum/AO/ etc.

Honestly I think AO is awesome and it is unfortunate they lost, but it was a great 7 game series. Better luck next year.

95% of the Penguins fan base are post lock-out bandwagon morons. Deal with it. Your smarmy, condescending posts don't change the facts. Sorry. Give it a decade... if the Pens can stay in Pittsburgh that long.

Can you document that 95%, or are you just making up statistics in the hopes of making this pathetic accusation seem somewhat true?

About that decade, I bet there is a greater chance of Pittsburgh having an NHL team in 10 years than there is the probability that Detroit will be a functioning city without a populace supported by US Govt. handouts.

Change the facts? You mean the one you just made up to throw some "smarmy" BS of your own?

Nothing more condesending than another fan trying to tell someone they're not as good of a fan as he is.. you're pro at failing!

Just as I thought. Resorts to the same crap when pressed. You are obviously part of my imaginary 95%. Now go away troll.

Solid as say what? Being too lazy to look up a topic to see if it has already been covered. Being non-topical enough to bring up a situation that happened about a month ago. Making a piss poor attempt at piling on during an off-day by dreging up an inconsequential past news story and stretching to make some sort of quasi-realtion to your team's opponents. Being dishonest enough to apply the action of one underage lunkhead to the entire fan base of a team. Solid like that?

Yup, real snazzy stuff there.

Just wanted to see if he would resort to the automotive handout angle. He didn't disappoint. They never do.

Troll? It would be convenient to pass me off as a troll (you'd be able to dismiss my point of view in the same manner you use fake stats to pad your weak arguments). Instead, you should open your eyes and use the mushy lump of matter sloshing around in your skull to deduce that I was one that informed Mr. Snazzy of the story he was seeking and posted it for him to read.

Also you can call my point crap if you want to avoid it to, but I was serious.

There is a better chance of Pittsburgh having and NHL team in 10 years than there is of Detroit surviving intact as a viable and non-perpetually bailed out city.

There is a slim chance that either will happen.

Factually though, Pittsburgh has locked in the Pens for the next 30 pus years and Detroit is suffering more than most cities as of late and has the best chance (of any city) to fail.

Also, allow me to piont out that nothing in my post alerted you the fact that I was a new fan; that was just another case of you making up portions of your argument in a failing attempt to strengthen it.

Assignment for next post:

Make one single level headed and accurate claim. Baby steps, baby steps.

Automotive angle? I was speakng more about the housing angle. The droves of people leaving the area angle. The empty space, reported to be as large as San Fran proper, in the city angle. The crime rate increase angle. Those angles, that when compared to the chance of Pittsburgh losing a hockey tema in 10 years, look a bit more likely.

I'n not surprised that my comment looked like flame to you and your ilk, you just aren't smart enough or a thorough enough readers to understand why I phrased my comment as I did.

You may now take note of the "search" feature that this forum provides. That takes care of one of my points, the rest have little or nothing to do with what date you registered here.

Most feeble back stroke I've ever seen. Seriously.

Look, you're obviously highly enamored with your own powers of inference and deflection. I get it. You think you are really smart and it's highly evident that you want other people to think so too. Why are you here? For intelligent conversation. Why aren't we on the Penguins board? Intelligent conversation. It's not a coincidence.

Here's my baby step claim... you are a troll that slipped and accidentally slid into Penguin message board mode and slammed the City of Detroit's economic woes. At best, highly unoriginal.

Don't hide your true colors. Flaunt them. Be proud of them.
