why not grab some playoff style defensemen?

I could see replacing Lebda with a hard hitting stay at home defensemen. Someone who will always be back and has a good first pass. Can't think of anyone off hand. That guy Lilja would work.

Kronner and Stuart need to be separated. Since the first game of the season both of them have been bad in the turnover department. You can't have both DMEN with the same type of faults on the ice together. Splitting them up also means the other team has to keep their heads up while two pairs of D are out there. But, who do you move up to the first pairing? Or who do you drop to the third pairing? I think I move Stuart to the third pairing where you are stuck paying over 3mil to a fifth defensemen.

Also, Big Rig and Lebda do not complement each other. Some times it develops over time, and sometimes it can't be forced.

Among defensemen healthy enough to play in the playoffs for the Wings, the one who fits the description put forth here of a "playoff-type defenseman" the most is Brad Stuart.

If we had six Brad Stuarts playing for us on defense, I somehow doubt we'd have made the final, as he was our worst defenseman throughout the playoffs, and by far the worst player on the ice in Game 7 as his poor decisions were responsible for both of Pittsburgh's goals.

And Hudler shouldn't take the blame at all?

Hudler should have seen the defenseman pinch in and provide support for him. He went straight towards both Stuart and Kunitz, missing the puck and allowing Talbot to make a break off a two on one chance.

The only way the Wings have space is if Lilja goes on LTIR, and if thats the case, then Denis Gauthier would probably be the most sensible replacement in that kind of role. Slow, heavy, but hard-hitting and shot-blocking. 182 hits and 104 shot blocks in 65 games sounds about right.

If Lilja goes on LTIR, and the Wings can get Gauthier for 1M or less, I think that would fit the bill.

Lilja will go on LTIR if he isn't ready to go by training camp.

And I think signing another defenseman is a pipe-dream considering Holland's comments. Our defense has the potential to be 2007-2008 great (same defensive core minus Ericsson), so I don't think the team needs a new defenseman.

i am sure holland is counting on pain train coming back. but what if he doesn't? i would bet anything if he was healthy we would of won the cup. we were so close already, and lilja is our only big body on the blue, the only real shot blocker/crease clearer. if lilja doesn't recover this needs to be addressed and i believe he will.

It comes down to coaching. McCrimmon needs to be let go. Hire someone like Lemaire. We'll be fine. As soon as the Wings sign a Adam Foote type d-man, the penalties will get called on us. Not like they aren't already being called on us and not on them. Ie. Zetterberg goaltender interfernece game 6, same scenario gmae 7, same ref, no call on pit.

That being said, is Foote available?

DERIAN HATCHER BABY!!!!!

Why hasn't Holland ever thought about signing this guy before? He's won a Cup, is North American, is big and likes to hit. If we had a guy like that on our team, we could never lose in the playoffs.

Well, unless he blew out his knee or something.

i think if we have learned any thing this playoffs it is this. the defensemen infront of the net is allowed to punch/slash/kick/elbow/slewfoot/stomp/interfere/hook as much as he wants. there will be no call. which is a very effective tool in the playoffs. our D are great in the opposing end, but why not fill the 3rd line with some nastiness.

i don't care who, but i would love a gill, pronger, eager type defensemen. it is just the facts. you are allowed to injure anyone you want in front of the net. why not do it?? their style comes cheap and they get the job done.

Since when Eager is def?

Gill? You must be kiddin' right?!

Pronger, how are you going to get him? Trading Maltby + Emmerton? + his salary... Right...

Gauthier would be nice... when you are saying hard hitting - he's hard-hard hitting def...

1. Steve Montador wouldn't be bad either - right hand shot (hard shoot) he can run our 2nd PP unit (bye-bye Sammy), he's gritty def and at $800.00 is BETTER option than Lebda or Meech.

2. Kyle McLaren - if he can get in shape - would be good addition.

3. Kurtis Foster, Walker, Strudwick...

Hossa has been criticized all playoff about not scoring goals. Yet he was one of Detroit's top defensive forwards all playoff, set up linemates for many excellent scoring opportunities, and created his own scoring opportunities many times.

Just because he didn't score doesn't mean he wasn't playing well. No, he wasn't playing as well as he did in the regular season. But neither was Pavel Datsyuk, who many here would gladly get on their knees for regardless of his playoff performance. Hossa was no less effective overall in the playoffs than Datsyuk, yet Datsyuk gets no criticism and Hossa is assaulted with full force. And Datsyuk is a Hart finalist who was expected to do much more than Hossa going into the playoffs.

Holmstrom, as you mentioned, was pretty terrible. And is another forward who does not receive much criticm yet should catch much more.
