2 and a half questions:

1. When did Nick start rise above the rest and start to show his dominant prowess as a number 1 Dman and perennial Norris nominee?

1 and a half. What was the early part of his career like?

2. When did LGW begin to change from forum of mainly good, well thought hockey discussions to mostly knee jerk, smart ass comments offering up little in the way of real contribution?

Unfortunately, LGW is not the place it once was, and because of it I don't see a lot of the good contributors with great observation and insight here nearly as much.

On questions 1 and 1.5 you don't actually say anything, just ask a question seemingly unrelated to the discussion, so I'll wait for some content before addressing it. But yes, I am old enough to remember Lids entire career and being a native Michigander I have always been a Wings fan.

On question 2, that's a valid hypothesis. Though if these intellectual Wing fan gurus left because they didn't like postings on message boards then they wouldn't have stayed anyway. I have an alternate hypothesis. Do you think maybe they left because they were sick of reading that considering acquiring sadists and our most bitter of enemies like Chris Pronger made coming to a sight called "Let's Go W-I-N-G-S" pointless? Would you go into a church and storm out when they reject your idea of intellectually considering devil worship without their Christian bias?

I think it's stupid as well but it's not that unfathomable. Just think of the names that eventually became Wings. Chelios. Derian Hatcher. Bertuzzi. Ulf Samuelsson.

The Wings take anybody and everybody if they will help them win. That's all.

Of those, only Cheli is really comparable to the personal history he had with the Wings. The one you didn't mention because it didn't happen was when Holland was discussing Belfour. I was horrified. I take your point that anything can happen, but Pronger and Lemieux in particular have such bitter personal histories with the Wings I don't see how Holland could ever sign them and expect fans to accept them. But as you point out it did happen with Cheli.

But that it COULD happen doesn't change my view that it's one of the worst decisions Holland could make and as for me I'd rather not make the playoffs without Pronger then win the Cup with him. There is no room for him in sports, he has no respect for other athletes who are trying to make livings themselves. That was the difference to me with Cheli, others argue he was as bad. To me though, even though accepting him wasn't easy I never felt he was willing to end careers like Pronger and Lemieux. And I don't think Pronger would even care. It's my view, it's a message board, I'm saying so.

This thread is a year premature but I have been playing around on capgeek.com running through all sorts of situations that may play out for next season and i noticed something.

We will have over ten million dollars in expiring contracts coming off the books after next season which includes Nick Lidstroms 7.6 salary. If we are able to get Hossa back in the mix we will have around 6 million to play with. Nick will be 40 years old at that point so if we win him a fifth cup i could definitely see him calling it a career.

Which brings us to our next point: Replacing Nick. So I started looking at the best available defensemen for the 2010 free agent class and at the top of the list, Chris Pronger.

You all know where im going with this, but before you call me crazy, when I say at the top of the list, i mean at the top of the list. The next best available dman was Marek Zidlicky. Also..

1. We will have about 10 million in cap room and with the way the Red Wings operate, we will without a doubt be looking to sure up our defense.

2. Why would Pronger leave one western conference powerhouse to go to another? Well, with trade rumors spiraling around him, Anaheim may make that move for him. I certainly cant see him spending his remaining years in the NHL with a team like LA if this trade were to end up happening. Also, I could fully see Pronger wanting a shot to take out his former team if he were moved.

Like I said, i know this is a year premature, but it is the offseason after all so I think its interesting to discuss. Begin.

Don't EVER use those 2 word in the same sentence.

How bout Komisarek? I admit I never really watched him but I hear he's tough. He' big and disciplined they say. Expensive but you never know.

Komisarek is a free agent this summer.

The Red Wings couldn't sign him without dumping some major salary on defense. Although, I would love to see Komisarek on the Red Wings over Rafalski or Kronwall.

you have GOT to be kidding me. You're actually suggesting we replace Lord Lidstrom when he retires with CHRIS PRONGER??

That would be like the United States asking Saddam Hussein to be the next president.

That would be like Al Qaeda asking a jew to be their next leader.

are you out of your ******* MIND?

Actually its more like Al Qaeda asking George Bush to be their next leader, which if you think about it wouldnt be so bad for them because Dubya has killed more Americans than Osama Bin Ladin ever will...

HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

It's nice to hear someone is paying attention to what's going on. Actually, it wasn't George Bush who killed all those people though, it was his army of evil flying kangaroos who were trying to murder the homeless disguising the deaths as caused by drugs or crime.

Just to pass on a tip, never wear clothing, George Bush learned how to weave clothing from microfilm, it's not safe. Oh, and if you have to wear shoes, wear Crocs. But only the pink ones, it's harder to track you, I don't know why. And always walk backwards, it throws off the kangaroos if they try to dive bomb you. And be sure to always wear aluminum foil on your head, it prevents George Bush from reading your mind through his periscope in the White House bathroom.

The one thing you're not up on is that W actually isn't President anymore, Obama is now. But other then that, you are all over reality my friend! Way to go.

Pronger would end up like Bertuzzi. Way more harm than good and a black eye on the type of quality players we want on the team. Don't sell your soul for thirty pieces of silver or in this case one big piece of silver. Pronger would require a very long time to forgive Detroit over. I would almost have to root for Saint Louis or Montreal instead.
