Surely Chelios is done as a Wing?

The Wings certainly shouldn't re-sign Cheli. I would think when you cannot even crack the top 6 anymore, you need to move on or hang them up. Filling in as #7 is fine for guys like Meech, but for a HOF, formerly elite defenseman, being a fill in guy, and not playing in the finals two years in a row ought to be a clue. I personally think it's time for Cheli to step down. Loved having him hear but it's time....

He should have rotated thru the end of season and playoffs spelling the D men for a rest. That way, maybe they would not have gotten so run down and made so many mistakes in the playoffs, and Wings would have won.

That was the ticket right there.

Good point. I don't think that he played 6 minutes a night because of his age, I think that he played 6 minutes a night because he was damn rusty (though age may have been a factor). It would be interesting to see how he would perform with regular minutes.

It appears Chris Chelios has played his last game for the Detroit Red Wings.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Chelios will not be offered a contract by the team after meeting with general manager Ken Holland on Monday.

"I met with Chelios and told him we would not be offering him a contract," Holland told the Free Press. "He wants to play again. I really think that he does have another year in him. I think he can play 10 to 15 minutes. I think he can play on a third pair."

In 28 games this season, the 47-year-old Chelios scored no points with a plus-1 rating.

Over his 26-year career, the Chicago native has scored 185 goals and added 763 assists for 948 points in 1,644 games.
