If somebody wants to screw Kenny over, an offer-sheet of 3M would do it. Hudler is worth 3M, but the Wings cant afford to pay him that. And losing him for a 2nd rounder is damn near pathetic. That, and I dont see the Wings matching the offer only to trade Hudler.

Yeah, that would sting.

These numbers suck -- basically makes it easier to snag RFAs. That's all the league needs... more movement and higher salaries.

Yeah, and the crappy thing is they have to wait a full year before they can trade him after they match the offer per the rules. Leaves us in a bad situation.

Have I understood the RFA rule right?

If a team offers Hudler a contract worth 3 millions then Red Wings can't sign him anymore with let's say 2 millions even if he wanted to stay and take a discount. Hudler must play for the team that offered 3 millions and Detroit gets the 2nd round pick. Is this correct? If this is true then it's like a trade, but a forced one for Red Wings. The other team is forcing Detroit to make a trade.

No, the player has to agree to the offer sheet. Just making the offer isn't good enough.

Once the player signs the offer sheet, then his salary is set. It's then just a matter of finding out who he's going to play for.

Thanks, that makes much more sense. I couldn't find the rule anywhere in the internet.

Personally I just don't see how Hudler's worth $3 million; maybe $2 mill, but that's about it.

On the open market, Hudler is easily worth $3m.

Just not to this Red Wings team... and Flip is not worth it either.

Okay...Let me ask this...What kind of #'s (goals/assists/time on ice) would you expect from Hudler if he were on another team?

To me Hudler is a victim of circumstance in alot of ways; he's small, not overly fast, not overly physical, not a defensive stalwart, not an offensive power as some here would like to think, and to top it all off - he's a RFA heading into a season in which the cap is stagnant, and will most likely go down in the 2010/2011 season.

Filppula got lucky IMO; no apparent issue with the cap when he signed his lucrative 5 year deal, and no Hossa at the time when he re-signed.

Like I said - I don't honestly think Hudler is worth - nor will he get more than $2 million per year...If another team wants to give him more - then let him walk, and take the pick.

He has great offensive abilities and is improving each year. He has a lot of potential that he is working towards as he learns the game at the NHL level.

He's only 25, has improved every single year with limited minutes and put up over 50 points last year.

That is absolutely worth $3 million. Hopefully he is not worth $3 million *and* a 2nd round draft pick to another team.

Anything is possible - a team like the Rangers starving for offense and power play help could make him an offer over 2.615M but my gut tells me any offer sheet he sees will be just below that threshold. I don't see the Wings matching anything over 2 - 2.25M. He may be worth more but given the situation I just can't see it.

Nope. 'cause the Wings would sign him to an RFA offer under 3 million anyway. (unless they end up signing Hossa)

 What a waste of cap space that would be! Plus that would tie up all the remaining space! Plus Abby is stuck inG all season barring LTIR. Plus meech will be your 13th forward AND 7th defensman (if Lilja cannot play)

LET HUDLER WALK FOR ANYTHING OVER $1.1million... (not that he is not worth it, he is worth $3m or more, but not with our limited cap space, don't wanna use the entire cap on Hudler and have no room for call ups.)

Abdelkader will spend all season in Grand Rapids baring an injury anyways...Babcock and Holland have already stated as much.

I think that Hudler for 2 million on a one year contract is reasonable for Detroit, but I think they would match anything that doesn't give them a 1st round pick. Holland can maneuver around to fit Hudler in around 3 million if he trades away Lebda or Meech. It would be tough though. I realistically see Hudler agreeing to come back on a 1 year deal around 2-2.5 million which I think is fair. Really it comes down to who agrees first though Hudler or Samuelsson at an affordable rate.

ok, lets use that logic: (and capgeek)

2009-2010 Detroit Red Wings

Pavel Datsyuk $6,700,000

Henrik Zetterberg $6,083,333

Johan Franzen $3,954,545

Valtteri Filppula $3,000,000

Daniel Cleary $2,800,000

Tomas Holmstrom $2,250,000

* Jiri Hudler $2,000,000

Kris Draper $1,583,333

* Ville Leino $950,000

Kirk Maltby $883,333

Darren Helm $599,444

DEFENSEMEN

Nicklas Lidstrom $7,450,000

Brian Rafalaski $6,000,000

Brad Stuart $3,750,000

Niklas Kronwall $3,000,000

Andreas Lilja $1,250,000

Jonathan Ericsson $900,000

Brett Lebda $650,000

Derek Meech $483,333

SALARY CAP $56,800,000

PAYROLL $56,420,653

BONUS MONEY (ESTIMATED) (0% of cap) $0

CAP ROOM $379,347

CAP ROOM PER OPEN SPOT $189,674

AUTO-GENERATED CAPGEEK.COM LINES

FORWARDS

Pavel Datsyuk ($6.7m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.1m) / Johan Franzen ($4.0m)

Valtteri Filppula ($3.0m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.8m) / Tomas Holmstrom ($2.2m)

* Jiri Hudler ($2.0m) / Kris Draper ($1.6m) / * Ville Leino ($0.9m)

Kirk Maltby ($0.9m) / Darren Helm ($0.6m)

Brett Lebda ($0.7m) / Derek Meech ($0.5m)

GOALTENDERS

Chris Osgood ($1.4m) / Jimmy Howard ($0.7m)

...so giving Huds $2million (your minimum) Leino a modest raise to $950,000. Brining up Helm/Ericsson/Howard permanently. Leaves you (see above) $379,347,with only 11 forwards! Pencil Meech in as the 13th, who are you gonna get for $379,000? Nobody. Not even Abby.

Like I said Hudler or Sammy at $1.1 AND bring up Abby, fine, but if either want more (not that they are not worth more, just not with our space) then let the go. Bring Up Abby for the 11th spot and Meech can be the 13th, you'll have $1.5 for a UFA to fill the 12th forward position, like I said if Sammy or Huds takes it, I guess I am fine, but maybe find someone a little hungrier for the $1.5....

It works if you trade Lebda or Meech.

You can go into camp above camp so if Lilja is healthy you trade one of them, if Lilja is not healthy it isn't an issue until he is.

Edit: So as you can see 2 million dollars is in fact logical and cap geekable

In the cap-era NHL, history so far has taught us that if a player signs an offer sheet, the team offering, will make it difficult for the team retaining ownership to match (and fit the number under the cap) ala Penner or Vanek. In the case of Vanek, Buffalo didn't want to accept that high number ($7.5 million), but they were put in a position to because they had already lost two key players via free agency and did not want to lose three. Anaheim did not match Penner's offer sheet because they couldn't fit his salary in under the cap anyway. Even look at the pre-cap era and some of the offer sheets. If these teams want to steal a player, they have to make it an attractive offer to the player and a discouraging one for the previous team to match, that is the way it always is, so if Hudler gets an offer sheet, expect it to be well higher than $3 million, as that is the only way he would likely be pryed away from the Wings, I would guess a $3.5-$4 million cap number will do it, as Dustin Penner took over $4 million with numbers slightly inferior to Hudler.
