Wings to trade one defenseman

Detroit has a lot of options at D and will probably sort it all out at camp --

Meech failed to impress like I thought he would last year, but he is cheap and versatile.

Lebda has started to grow on me -- I'd like to see him stay, but if you absolutely need the cap space it is an option.

I have a hard time seeing Lilja traded -- at $1m he is a huge value for the size and PK skills we tend to lack.

Kindl had a great camp a couple years ago and almost made the team, and had a better season in GR last year -- makes $850k though

Pyett is getting close, but aso makes $850k

Kolosov is one who might get a strong look -- signed for only $525k and a 6'4 defensive guy who hits hard

Lahsoff is a 6'3 guy who might be a Quincey

Piche is a larger version of Meech

If any one of these guys has a great camp, they could find their way onto the team full-time.

True - only reason why I would rather keep Meech instead of Lebda is his versatility "playing" forward when needed...

You forgot some reasons.

"And the fact that he's younger. And the fact that he's a better overall player, without losing any of the speed we loved from Lebda. And the fact that his cap hit is almost $200k lower."

I really disagree with that. Did you watch Lebda in these playoffs? He was great. I've never seen Meech even close to that level. I think Lebda is a fair bit faster than Meech too.

Ok, I admit I am adding Meech's potential for improvement into the equation...something Lebda apparently never possessed as he is the same ******* player now as the first day he played for the Wings. But skating? Meech is definitely as fast as Lebda, perhaps a quarter-step slower. It's very close. It doesn't appear you've actually watched Meech play, though.

Because if I disagree with you, I must not know what I'm talking about?

No, I've seen Meech play and I've never been even slightly impressed. On his best nights you don't notice him. Usually that would be good enough, but that seems to be the best he's capable of playing...and it's rare. When Lebda plays well you do in fact notice him though. Both his speed and positioning.

I'll give you that Lebda hasn't improved a pile since he came to the Wings, but I'd still take him over Meech any day. And to me, the 200k difference in salaries isn't enough to justify keeping Meech over Lebda.

And Lebda has on occasion played forward as well.

I've noticed his out-of-positioning a number of times. That being said, I've never been impressed with either really. I would keep Meech over Lebda myself. He seems to have a better shot, though really there isn't a whole lot of other difference than the 200k price tag.

He is out of position sometimes yes. I was saying his positioning is good when he plays well though - not all the time.

The other thing that Lebda does have is that he's more physical. Not regularly, but he does have some nice hits. Three that come to mind are him laying out Brad Winchester when he was with the Oilers, the hit on Clutterbuck, and the admittedly low hit on Langkow in the playoffs.

I guess this really just comes down to a matter of opinion though.
