Gaborik signs with Rangers, 5 years x $7.5

$7.5 million to watch his hangnails heal? No thanks. This was a horrible signing. I can't believe someone was willing to gamble that much cap space/hard cash on someone whose heart and skeleton are made of balsa wood.

Welcome to the world of the Rangers. Seriously if there ever is a player that is past his prime, has issues, would be star in need of a home, they always wind up as NY Ranger. Bad signing methinks. Poor Rangers fans, Hossa would have been better for this money...

Overpayment? They basically replaced Gomez with Gaborik. Not a bad move. Gaborik, if healthy is up their with Kovelchuk in skill level. Rangers needed this boost. Plus they probably were competing with high offers from LA, Minni and whoever else.

Is it just me, or do last years "power houses" like the Wings, Devils, San Jose, Boston and Pengiuns not looking too great anymore. None of these 5 teams are improving their rosters, while teams like Philly, Washington, Calgary and Chicago are vastly getting better. Even the Rangers are getting better. This free agency is the epitomy of what the cap is all about, leveling the field. Our chances aren't looking good. Even Vancouver is looking significantly worse.

Gaborik: Sure hope he stays healthy. This signing does not make the Rangers significantly "better."

Philly, Calgary, Chicago, (Washington??): Sure, they look better on paper. Their roster looks better for next year, but all have handcuffed themselves against the cap to varying degrees.

Detroit, NJ, SJ, Boston, Pitts: The only similarities they have as a whole is that none of them made any big flashy moves during the first couple days of free-agency. Standing pat and letting the GMs who feel the need to sign these players and make moves immediately is not the worst thing in the world.

I was hoping Gabby would sign with the Wings. He'd be a nice upgrade from Hossa, but I didn't expect Holland would make a move for him. And now that I see he is getting a $7.5 mil contract, I KNOW there's no way we could have gotten him. Its a very risky move by the Rangers. If he stays healthy, he's worth every penny. If he continues to have injury problems... well.

I wouldn't have paid that much for him. I thought with him missing pretty much the entire season, he would've gotten at most $6 mil.
