RedWings Gone Wild 6 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 This is absoltuely 100% right. The Wings european players are underrated a lot of the time for the toughness. Detroit doesnt need pure fighters when almost all of their euro forwards are as tough as they are. It really disgusts me to hear ppl claim that Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Franzen aren't as tough as they really are. Granted, Hudler, Samuelsson and FIlppula could stand to toughen up a little bit but overall Detroit is a tough team. They out muscled the all mighty Anaheim Ducks in the playoffs (the NHL's bs model franchise for toughness). Don't waste your time being logical... you can go back to 07 or 08 on this mssg board and you'll see the same guys saying the wings are missing the kind of grit that wins cups... somehow continued success hasn't shown these people the value of a good euro... We've been the most euro heavy team in the NHL since we started poaching Russians in the early 90s... but it's only brought us to 6 Stanley cup finals and 4 cup wins... so I can empathize with the skepticism.... especially considering all those Canadian heavy dynasties we've had lately.... Goonery has certainly worked wondering for Philly.
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 I think part of the problem is that instantly if you're european or russian you're instantly deemed to be a soft player. Detroit has done so well because they european and russian players they have, for the most part, are significantly tougher than they are ever given credit for. You don't need goons to win a cup. Bu tyou do need tough players that are willing to take some punishment to get it done and in my eyes we have a ton of guys like that.
REDARMY92 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 (edited) I'm not panicing. Believe me, I just don't want him on our team, period. One win away from the Stanley Cup? Exactly!!! Oh wait... Then subtract; Hossa, Sammuelson, Hudler, and Kopecky. I know people have a bizarre fascination with Holland, who has been good. But he gets overly undeserved credit for player development research that Jim Dellevano actually does. Okay, I'm probably not the first one to tell you this, but don't panic. Hossa is going to hurt a little, However, He's out for the first 4 month's anyway because he screwed up his shoulder. so he might not even be the same player he once was. Secondly Samuelsson, He's very inconsistent, kind of a liability, there's times where he looks good. but most of the time he looks like he dosen't even diserve to be out there. Next, Kopecky, he's garbage, he tries to bring grit to the table, but he's been hurt every time we need him, we can live without him. Hoodie, miight hurt, but can be easily replaced. peronally I don't think he's any better than Williams. If we get Williams at a cheap price, we could also bring in a guy like Mike Grier, who says he want's to be a Red Wing, he brings grit and can score. We still have a ligit shot in 2010. even if we don't sign anyone. look for breakout years from Helm, Leino and Abdelkader. Goonery has certainly worked wondering for Philly. There was nothing to complain about. In the 90's, Probert, Grimson, Kocur, McCarty, Lapointe, Rouse, Ciccireli, Ward, Vladdy, Malts and Drapes back when they hit things, Shanny, Homer, Brown. Last year when we won the Cup, Drake, Downey, McCarty, Cleary, Helm, Stuart, Chelios, Lilja. Not quite the 90's but it was good enough to get the Cup. This year? Cleary, Stuart... ?? Helm was great in the playoffs, Abby too, but we didnt have a checking line, we had a decent 4th line, and a skilled 3rd line. Thankfully this year, whether the Wings want to or not, there wont be a whole lot of skill on the 3rd line, like it should be. 2008's Drake-Draper-Cleary/Samuelsson line was great, shut down the other team and contributed, then Hudler-Helm-Mac/Malts could score and throw the body (well 2/3's of the line could.) Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2009 I can't believe you put Chelios in the picture for the 08 cup run. He was absolutely useless that year.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted August 3, 2009 I can't believe you put Chelios in the picture for the 08 cup run. He was absolutely useless that year. Cheli may not have had much impact, but he's still a gritty prick, an old gritty prick.

The Marovengian 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2009 First off Hi all...this is my first time on these boards. I for one would rather have Williams back than Todd Bertuzzi. I also heard Valcav Prospals name come up to?
