Meh, I don't really like this trade. Stralman is 22 right? Too soon to give him up, especially for an overpaid 4th liner and a late 2nd round pick.

It wouldn't surprise me if he asked to be traded because they really never gave him a shot and yoyo'ed him up and down from the AHL all year. He never seemed to be too happy in Toronto.

I think this means Kaberle is staying.

I wanted Strålman for the Wings, too.

Seriously, his willingness to shoot (right handed) seems like it would look great along with Kronwall's ability to pass on the power play. And at a cap hit of 615K for this year and next year he would be awesome in Lebda's place. It's too bad the Flames don't want Lebda (I'm assuming). I'd probably give up a prospect or two for him.

What has Wayne Primeau ever done that would make someone WANT to trade for him? And he is on the downside of his career, and the players traded are not even at their peak.

Something strange about this...

Just checked his stats, his career year is a staggering 9 goals and 29 points in 03-04, when he last played a "full season". Check that, he has NEVER played a full season, his highest games played is 71.

I don't think this is a good trade. The Leafs are already stacked with 4th liners, and Stralman has some potential.

I think Primeau is fairly irrelevant in this trade. It's basically the 2nd rounder for Stralman with a bunch of nondescript pieces thrown in.

Primeau being involved says to me that Calgary wouldn't make the deal without him in it.

It's not a HORRIBLE trade but you've got to like this one if you're a Flames' fan... Stralman is a good, young asset for a mid-to-high 2nd rounder and they win the other part of the trade as well. A freebie 7th rounder and an OK depth winger for an overpaid aging Wayne Primeau. Calgary wins this one.

But from Toronto's point of view something had to be done with all those D and can't complain about a 2nd round draft pick. Not sure how much Primeau will actually play but I guess he'll provide some size and checking ability if he does stay healthy...

Hmm. This gives Calgary 7 d-men now. Phaneuf, Bouwmeester, Regehr, Sarich, Giordano, Pardy, Stralman. Obviously Stralmans strength is his offensive game, but Pardy was a perfectly fine #6, I'm wondering if Calgary may not be done?

Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up being a leader for the Marlies.

Ahh ok makes sense now. I didn't see that they acquired the 2nd round pick as well.

Makes sense I suppose. Two Marlies that couldn't manage to stick on the roster of an already talent deprived team get traded for a Burke style player with a contract the Flames needed to dump and a pick Burke wants.

Yeah, something has to give there. I assume that Stralman is out of AHL options (?).

Maybe they'll send Bouwmeester to their AHL farm team... he must not have used his AHL options up yet.

Three way deal that sends Stralman to Detroit! Get 'er done, Kenny!

Well the Flames are already stocked for full-time NHL d-men. And they're still tight against the cap. Stralman is dirt cheap so they won't want to dump him cheap, but it's possible he could be had.

I like to have some wishful thinking every now and again.

Even if he wanted to be in DET I don't even know where they would make room with everybody considered. They already declared that they will trade one defenseman; probably to make room for a forward. Healthy or unhealthy, I'd like for them to keep Lils along with Meech, mostly because he's a stopgap at forward and defense, which means Anton would be an 8th defenseman to start. Any chance he's willing to play in GR if he knows he'll be a Red Wing? Probably not.

Strålman is like the softest player there is, he would be even worse than meech in the defensive zone.. and that's BAD.

I live in the Toronto area so I see a lot of Leaf games (unfortunately). Although Stralman has some upside he is very, very soft. Do I think he could excel if given the time to groom his game in Grand Rapids? Yeah I think he could end up being able to contribute to an NHL team but is he worth giving anything up for at this stage of his development? Absolutely not. Toss in the fact he may not have any AHL options left and there is no point.

Red Wings aside, I think this was a terrible trade for the Leafs. Maybe I'm biased again Wayne Primeau but at $1.4M/yr I think he is overpaid and overrated. Sure he brings a bit of toughness to your team but I've always seen him as a poor man's tough guy style player, just like Keith was. Don't get me wrong, Im not saying they don't have heart and can take a pounding but I've always thought they both were poor skaters and overrated. I think the Leafs could have gotten a better return for Stralman.

I guess it really all depends on what they do with that 2nd rd pick. If they flip it in another deal it could become more worth while.

What they did was set the bar for the trade of the next defenceman out of town, which I figure will be Ian White. If Stralman gets a late 2nd rounder, Burke's going to want more for White.

But doesnt Toronto have 7 d-men including White? I'd keep him. He really impressed me in all facets of the game last season, showed some toughness, and his ability to play D or forward should make him a keeper imo. Finger should be the man to go before White.
