At present, Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom doesn't plan on retiring after 09-10 season

Posted by George James Malik July 31, 2009 06:04AM

As a follow-up to Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg's comments in Dagens Nyheter, Lidstrom also spoke to Aftonbladet's Henrik Lundgren from the Swedish Olympic team's gathering in Gothenburg:

July 31, Aftonbladet (translated): Lidström hesitates on Vancouver: "It depends on how I feel"

GÖTEBORG. He settled the Olympic finals in 2006. But it is far from certain that the Tre Kronor will play with, with Nicklas Lidström in Vancouver six months from now.

"It depends on how my body feels. I am on the right track, but still have pain in my elbow," says the giant defenseman

When the Swedish Olympic Team gathered forty NHL professionals in its introductory Olympic gathering, Nicklas Lidström was with them. But it means nothing.

"Nah, I'll make my decision when the NHL season begins. I ran rehabilitation all summer and am on track," said the Detroit star.

Bengt-Åke Gustafsson has gathered a provisional squad, but he will have 60-70 players on the list in a month. It is then that Lidström is going to give an answer.

"I had pain in several places during the finals. Right now, I feel good, but my I had pain in several places in the body during finals. Right now I feel good, but elbow injury has not healed yet."

How far ahead do you look? Your contract expires after this season?

"I'm looking that far as well. We shall see what happens next summer. But if I feel motivated and injury-free, in that case I would continue."

Is there a chance for Swedish clubs to entice you home?

"Right now neither the Eliteserien or KHL entice me. When I'm finished with the NHL, I'll be finished with hockey, too."

The thought of Lids signing at even a modest pay around $5 million next summer makes me salivate.

I honestly see him taking less. The Wings won't lowball him, but he's always taken one for the team, and with the Cap going down and the team in rough shape, I think he'll go for a 4 million, one-year contract or something. We know he won't ever play for another team and that way he allows the team to re-evaluate the Cap situation every year. He also knows the Wings won't screw him over. Lids is in the drivers seat as far as his contract goes and I think he'll take a lot less.

The great thing is, except for a few rough games here and there last season, he's still Norris Nick and I don't see him slowing down considerably.

Lidstrom also negotiated his own last contract, without an agent.

Tendinitus sucks though... I hope he has luck preventing it from getting much worse (it never really gets better).

Exactly, which is why $5 million isn't unreasonable one year from now. Don't get me wrong, Lids' character is second to none but it wouldn't be shocking to see him take $5 million, while $4 seems like an amazing stretch. It'd be great if he signed for $4, because we all know he's essentially in the drivers seat (within reason), but Kenny and Co. will take care of Lids the way he's taken care of them.

You're right, 5 is perfectly reasonable (hell, I think the 7 is reasonable for him), I just think he might surprise us, depending on what sort of shape the team's cap situation is in.

And to the guy who compared Yzerman and Lidstrom at age 40...I absolutely hate to say this but Lidstrom is still the greatest player in the league at his position, Yzerman was not, unfortunately.

Yzerman made ~ $1.25 million at age 40.

Just saying, Nicklas....

In any event, I'd be happy to have him at just about any price. Just one year contracts after 09-10, please.

Yzerman made A LOT more than he was worth when he was nearing end of his career.

That's understandable within reason....as we both agree on. If the Cap stays relatively similar to where it is now, the Wings will gain a decent amount of cap space given Lids dropping his salary by $2.45 (given a $5 million annual salary) along with Homer's $2.25 and Maltby's $0.883. I agree though, the '10/'11 cap number will greatly determine Lids' paycut.

Sidenote: I've left out Lilja's cap space along with Lebda's due to that money likely being taken by replacement D personnel.
