So, I think I can now safely buy my #52 Ericsson jersey

While I think you're on the ball here, I don't see why it should be done that way. Same goes for the Sedins (each of them have the first letter of their first name on their jersey).

Why can't the jersey just have the same last names but different numbers? Just leave it at that. In Howe's day they didn't even put their name on the back of the jersey, so it's not like you have to have a name to know who you're looking at... but that seems to be the trend in the current NHL.

I kinda know what you mean, but it helps in identifying players inasmuch as it also helps to sell merch. Someone at a slo-pitch game had a Red Sox home 34 on the back (NNOB, obv) and I had to stop for a second to try to remember who it was.

I thought about what the Blues did with Rich and Ron Sutter when they played:

Gotta love #64, John Vigilante, that would be one of the all-time great enforcer names, too bad it doesn't look like he drops the gloves much.

Edit: #65 Austin Fyten, another good enforcer name.

this is totally off topic, but saw vigilante play for the QC flames last year after he got loaned to us mid season. i really like him as a player. he's one of those 110% guys. while he doesn't have a ton of offensive skill i think he would be a great depth player in grand rapids. not sure if he would ever have nhl upside, but definitely a good guy to have prospects around.
