Red Wings Training Camp Notes

My man Stephen Johnston scored for Team Howe yesterday, excellent. Really want this kid to make it.

I'm a bit shocked at Tatar, the fact that he's the only draftee still at camp says wonders about how well he's played, how good his attitude is and how highly we rate him. It was probably a boom/bust pick but the very, very early signs are certainly extremely encouraging.

I have to admit, Tatar has surprised me. I really thought the WJ work was a flash in the pan type deal, but he's showing otherwise. I'm glad to see someone with a funny name doing well. Calling him The Sauce for years to come could be fun.

That's awesome that you guys get to go see them practice, wish i could but live in T.O.

I feel your pain bud. The only good thing about living in Toronto is laughing at pathetic Leaf fans. Although this year they may actually be half decent

Finally! That's what I wanted to happen all of last season, never happened.

Good to see they realised what one of the main problems was, they allowedthe opposition far too much time and space.

How was sitting back supposed to be an effective strategy in the first place? What kind of reasoning is behind that? Just the typical "let the game come to you" kind of cliche?

It can work if you've got good shot-blocking and a goaltender that can stop the first shot. And if your defensemen are slow it might not be a good idea to have them running around and getting out of position.

But for the Red Wings it was totally wrong.

Agreed. It worked for Pittsburgh and Anaheim against Detroit -- big bodies and good shot blockers.

Forces shots from the perimiter, and with Holmstrom injured and off his game as well as Datsyuk's reduced mobility it was hard for Detroit to be effective.
