Hack & Whack Rule! 160 Report post Posted October 10, 2009 http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=501650 Although I'm no fan of Quinn's, I really don't blame him for what he said. He wasn't talkin' smack, just saying the way it used to be, and the way it is now. I've never liked Iginla at all, and I can't help but think he's just a big d-bag. Not just for the incident, but the way he tries to suck ass later when he explains it. This is just another example of the league trying to control what people think...imho. Carman 387 Report post Posted October 10, 2009 Quinn should know better, he is lucky he is still able to coach NHL hockey. He should know after the Moore/Bertuzzi incident the league has no choice but to fine a coach/player for saying something like that.
Snazzy 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2009 (edited) Funny (not really funny) that they'll fine Quinn for saying this: "I don't understand the players of today," Quinn said. "If that had happened in the old days he would have got hit over the head with a stick right after. It was a pretty dirty play in my opinion. He poked his feet out and then piled on top of him. Somehow they never deal with that ... and they won't let the vigilante stuff happen to deal with it. It's disappointing." But they won't suspend a player (per the rules) for sending a message in the dying minutes of a blow-out game (Malkin gooning it up with Zetterberg). NHL has a lack of consistency and it's apparent they have their favorites. Shameful. EDIT: f*** you Bettman Edited October 10, 2009 by Snazzy
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted October 10, 2009 Embarrasing. Quinn is right, Iginla wouldnt have gotten away with that in the old days, I'm surprised the Oilers didnt go after him. (No, Moreau fighting Iginla straight up isnt going after him.) It was a dirty play and had it been on Lidstrom and Babcock had said the same thing, everyone on here would be behind him. Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted October 10, 2009 The league will always punish the b.s. calls, and let this stuff that can lead to extremely serious injuries slide. Campbell and Bettman are jokes and belong back trading stocks.
oldredbarnman 13 Report post Posted October 10, 2009 I had seen the incident a handful of times...I dunno; looks as though Iginla is trying to tie-up Souray (comes in from behind to push him up against the glass) whom then unexpectedly steps onto Iginla's stick, and takes a header into the boards with Iginla on top of him...I know Iginla has a bit of a dirty/mean streak, but I honestly don't think of him trying to injure Souray with intent as much as it was an unfortunate incident. Yes, Iginla is trying to tie Souray up, as is always done in a situation like this. But he does not step on Iginla's stick. Souray turns his skates, so he doesn't go straight into the boards, and Iginla's stick takes Souray's left skate from under him, knocking him off balance and head first into the boards. I don't think he was trying to injure him, but you ARE responsible for your own stick, whether it is off the ice and accidently clip another player, or on the ice doing what Iginla did. Lovin Jiri Fischer 147 Report post Posted October 10, 2009 The NHL is starting to resemble the taliban more and more every day. The league pretty much censors what everyone else thinks, and heaven forbid you disagree with them then you get fined or suspended. There's no honesty in the coaches' and players' speech anymore because everyone is afraid to get punished. Sean Avery got suspended for acting like a sixth grader. Quinn got fined for this one. Remember last year when Quennville got fined for showing his disagreement with the officiating during one game against us? If anyone sticks his neck out to challenge something the NHL or its officials have done, they are instantly punished. But the violence and headshots are allowed to continue. Take Malkin's non-suspension for his instigator penalty, even though it's in the RULE BOOK!.
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted October 10, 2009 I think its a shame players and coaches arent allowed to say what they think. I understand having some guidelines for censorship, but I have read those comments from Quinn several times now and I cannot for the life of me understand what is wrong with it. 10,000 dollars? Its sad but the NHL probably gets more revenue out of fining coaches and players than they do for Coyotes games.

When you talk about vigilante behavior on the ice after the Bertuzzi incident, you're gonna get some attention from the league. I don't think it was intentional by Iginla, but as others have said, you have to be responsible for your stick. He knocked Souray's skate out and created a dangerous play for both of them. And people really need to get over the Malkin thing. Yes, by the letter of the rule he should've been given a game misconduct. But the Wings got breaks too. Like Zetterberg covering the puck in the crease. It didn't make or break the series. the Wings just didn't get it done.
