Why are the Wings committing so many turnovers?

You see, LGW members have been suiting up in their favorite Red Wings uniform. This would explain the PANIC that they are in to dump the puck or at least make a good lead pass. Trying too hard leads to mistakes, aka turnovers.

Actually, I think it's a chemistry problem. I know it sounds like a buzzword, but it works for me this time. Some of the lines don't seem to have a whole lot of chemistry this year. Guys don't seem to be picking up what their linemates are putting down. Miscommunication between defensemen seems to be a bit of a problem also. All this leads to giving away the little black disc. It is not just recently, so you can't blame McCrimmon. It has been going on since the 2006-07 season. The Wings like a controlled break-out of their zone. However, a lot of teams are learning that if you pressure their defensemen (or sometimes forwards) with an aggressive forecheck, they can turn it over. Then, with their issues about not wanting to use the glass or ice the puck, the opposition can have a long run in the Wings' zone, leading to penalties or goals.

In the course of such a long season any team, good or bad, is going to have a hiccup here and there in the case of a blown lead. All teams also good/bad will play around .500 hockey in a span of just seven games as well.

I'm encouraged though. The Wings were outplaying one of the better teams in the league at present more often than not. Plenty of time to finish teams off for an entire game, and while the roster is fairly differeent from recent years I see no real reason to fret about being in danger if missing the postseason despite a .500 record so far, etc.

Anytime a team tries to make pretty plays all the time, they're going to be susceptible to turnovers.

The Wings like to make quick fancy passes out of their own zone instead of making the safe play. That often works to create rushes for us, however, that can also result in turnovers.

I agree. I think the D are not being patient with the puck and are forcing high-risk fancy passes. When this team was working it's best in the 07/08 Cup year, the defense was machine-like in how it moved the puck. They would pass back and forth and wait for the easy, smart play. Now they seem to get the puck and try to move it up ice as fast as possible.

To me, puck possession style denotes patience, and the Wings are not showing enough of that when they have the puck.

I totally agree. I noticed the change McCrimmon made was to get the puck out of the zone as quickly as possible... and that led to a lot of bad passes. I remember the patience the defense USE to have in passing the puck back and forth or even going back behind the net to start over again if that is what it took to get organized for the rush up the ice...... now THAT was puck possession. But I think what has changed is the strong forechecking we are now seeing from these young fast forwards. So there has got to be a balance of knowing when you can/should make that first quick pass out of the zone or when you need to reload and take the puck back behind the net.

This is a direct result of McCrimmon's influence. I noticed the change when McClellan left and he came in. His focus was to get the puck out of the zone as quickly as possible. In doing that it changed the "puck possession" style of play. The defensemen use to pass the puck back and forth to organize the rush up the ice. Now they make the first pass they see available which sometimes is not the best. But, what also has contributed to this is the speed of the game..... it has gotten much faster with teams focusing on very fast skaters.... this allows for more forechecking and putting the pressure on the D. Perhaps there is a happy medium...... maybe making the second or third available pass instead of the first... the defense needs to "see" the ice better and "read" the plays better.

Like Mickey Redmond says, "You work so hard to get the puck, why should you give it up." Let the opposing forwards chase our defensemen around while our defensemen play catch..... get the enemy exhausted first.....LOL.

This has been an issue since McCrimmon joined the staff. Is he to blame?

With every team signing younger faster players, there seems to be more aggressive forechecking thus putting more pressure on the defense.

It's all Detroit's top defensemen....

Turnovers a problem

McCrimmon is partly to blame. He's not providing our guys with the caliber type Red Wings defensive play we're used to playing. McCrimmon doesn't fit in the Red Wings system.
