It's not a bad idea but I don't understand how something like this works:

Matchup Results Overall Rank

St. Louis 53% 19

Montreal 47% 13

If St. Louis is voted a better team than Montreal (which they clearly are) how are they ranked 19th and Montreal 13th? It's a bit of a joke, Montreal is a god-awful team this year. I noticed this sort of thing happening a few times.

What's cool about it? It's more like inaccurate Wings are far from the 6th best team in the league atm

Well who didn't see THAT coming?

But it isn't.

If people are basing it on previous seasons, perhaps.

Given the off-season subtractions, the injuries and the way the team is currently not hitting its stride.....it is. That's why mindfly wrote "atm". *Should* the Wings be in the top 6 of the league given their current roster: Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that right now they aren't playing like a top 6 team.

It's really not that difficult to interpret. The question posed is, "Which team is better?" and not "Which team is playing better at the moment?".

People's opinions are that Detroit is the fifth best team in the league.

I understand, but mindfly's comment was in regards to how the Wings are playing at the moment. My comment didn't have to do with how talented the Wings are and whether or not they should be in the top 6. The truth is regardless of their losses in the offseason and their injuries, they should be.

No worries Doggy, we were arguing apples and oranges.

Cheers

You'd hafta to dramatic, biased or incredibly stupid to honestly think Buffalo has a better team than Detroit.

I'm basing it on them thoroughly outplaying and outhustling us already this season. Oh, and the fact that they are 4-1-1 right now. If that makes me stupid, biased, dramatic or all three... so be it.

They lost in OT to Montreal, who's pretty bad.

They also lost to ATLANTA. Good god.

That we barely showed up to the game doesn't say anything about the season. This isn't the NFL or college football. One game doesn't mean you're out of the playoffs or in the playoffs.

The teams Buffalo has beaten, BTW: Wings, Preds, Coyotes, Isles. Not exactly a prestigious list, barring the Wings.

Edit: On topic, it's kinda cool, and the playoff predictions are similar to the teams I think will be going from the West. But as people noted, most hockey fans will vote with the heart and not actually think about what they're voting on, thus is not really a legit tool.

Is it really THAT hard to admit that, right now, the Buffalo Sabres are playing better hockey? Really?

It is, because they're not. Had we played them like we played the Hawks, the Caps, the Kings, or the Avs, we would have won.

Every team is gonna have off nights. The Sabers seem like they're playing great hockey because they haven't really been up against anything tough.

I never said they are playing "great" hockey. I simply believe they are playing a more team oriented/hustle oriented game than the Wings are at the moment. Sue me. If the Sabres are able to maintain their level of play for the entire season, they will make the playoffs. If the Wings maintain... they won't.

This isn't based on the yahoo model but Avalanche fans are excited abput a recent TSN one;

How would we here at Mile High Hockey react if a Tampa Bay Lightning blog started bad-mouthing the Avalanche organization and relentlessly criticizing Colorado players? We'd ignore them, because who cares? The last thing we'd do is waste our time arguing with the fans of a team we don't care about. There's no rivalry between the Lightning and the Avalanche, and you can't just make one up out of thin air.

Just as you can't create rivalries out of nothing, you can't just decide that an old, bitter rivalry is dead. And you definitely can't claim that it's dead when you purposely act to keep that rivalry alive by going out of your way to engage the rival fans on their home territory.

I bring this up again because the Avalanche play the Red Wings again on Saturday. And, I'd like to bring something else up, from TSN:

WingsArentRight.jpg

This rivalry will never die, even if I have to give it daily mouth-to-mouth.

The Wings have already started to play better hockey; or did you miss the last two games?

It'll be more telling when the Wings go on a long road trip like these next two coming weeks. If they can go on the road, come together as a team, and actually get their game back on track, it's safe to lock up the playoffs.

If the Wings maintain their current level of hockey (i.e. vs the Kings and Avs), they'll still make the playoffs, but it might be as the #8 seed instead of the top four.

Are we pretending that they didn't give up three goals in the third period and lose in the shootout to a very questionable Avalanche team? I'm sure you have an excuse for the loss, but it's still a loss that should have been a win.

While I agree that the Wings seem to be coming around in certain areas, unlike you, I'm hesitant to label them as auto contenders based on the names on the roster alone.

Pretty sure your "questionable Avalanche team" is 6-1-1 right now, bro. ;)

That's better than the Sabers who you're ready to give the Cup to right now.

Hypocrisy is spelled B-r-o-k-e-n-1-6 now, apparently.

I totally do. His line "This rivalry will never die, even if I have to give it daily mouth-to-mouth." is awesome.

Would have been awesome if the Wings and Avs could have found a way to make that rivalry last. That was some good s***.

Wow... you have derailed over this. First off. I never once said that the Sabres are even Cup contenders. I said that if they can maintain their level of play, I believe they will make the playoffs. Pump the brakes a little.

Second, the Avalanche are questionable. So are the Sabres. So are the Wings <gasp!> (oh my god... I said it) Does the fact that they are playing solid hockey somehow validate the Wings blowing a third period lead? A three goal lead, no less.

I think all teams are questionable at the moment, and you think all teams are questionable besides the Wings... and somehow I'm the hypocrite. Hmmm... ok.

By the way... as long as we are nitpicking, go ahead and scratch the Yotes off of your 'easy win' list for the Sabres. They are currently 5-2. Or are we going to nitpick their schedule and label them a s***ty team?
