eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted November 13, 2009 True, but he'll let in a hell of a lot more if he isn't on top of his crease. That deflection last night was sheer bad luck and those types of goals happen during the course of a season. I'll take any goalie playing the percentages by cutting off angles by being further out with a point shot coming in then the other way around. Point and case: look at how that plagued Dom in the 07/08 first round. Way too deep in his crease, way too many shots found their way through because of all the extra room. Howard wasn't at the top though, he was halfway out of his crease on the goal. Had he been in his crease properly, he could have stopped it.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted November 13, 2009 Howard wasn't at the top though, he was halfway out of his crease on the goal. Had he been in his crease properly, he could have stopped it. I never said he was. I was referring to goalies being on top of the crease which is what you replied to Pucks about. He/she stated he was on top of his crease all night (which he was), and you stated "He gave up a goal for that reason" which isn't entirely accurate. I was simply replying to the statement you made, which isn't a fair argument because it wasn't what Pucks was referring to. So I then took it further to state I'd rather have a goalie playing the percentages than sitting back. Nothing more.
MabusIncarnate 5,359 Report post Posted November 13, 2009 (edited) Nice to see him dish out an NHL performance finally, but i'm far from convinced. Edited November 13, 2009 by BlazeYoungblood
Hiei 192 Report post Posted November 14, 2009 What I've seen of Howard this season has shown me this: First games: He would bury himself in the blue, and use his reactiveness to make saves, but gave up rebounds to players 10 feet in front of the crease These last couple games: He's been on top of or in front of the paint, ABSORBING instead of DEFLECTING the puck. Great side to side movement. Needs work on control when he is playing the puck to teammates...other than that... THINK WITH YOUR DIPSTICK JIMMY!!!!!!
Opie 308 Report post Posted November 14, 2009 Please stop already!!!! After Howards first 2 starts everyone bitched and complained. Now he played well in his last 2 starts and everyone thinks he is a super star. When he plays so so his next start is everyone going to say he sucks again, give it a rest! Really that is what this thread is about, I thought it was a couple of people saying he has played well. I don't even recall anyone but people like you saying "WHOA, he is not a superstar" even using the word superstar in this thread.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted November 14, 2009 He also gave up a goal for this reason. I'd rather him have the confidence to stray and challenge the shooter than be passive and hugging the posts all night long. Sure every situation calls for a special response, but he'll get more comfortable with when to do what over time. Until then the Wings can utilize their defense. Its not like our defensive core is seriously flawed.

Its not like our defensive core is seriously flawed. Yeah, this. I'd much rather have Howard being aggressive and comfortable; making the huge stops and let in one goal than be between the pipes all night long, looking like a lost puppy. The main thing to take from the last two games is that the defense has finally learned what "clearing the crease" means. Watching rebounds and players in the crease and clearing them out or locking them up.
