Winged_Wheeler 3 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 Fire McCrimmon and make Chelios our new defense coach.
Tommy_Like_Wingy 25 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 Here's a list that I've made before They can't win defensive faceoffs They can't prevent entry into the zone They can't clear pucks They can't block shooting lanes They can't cover the point They can't clear the front of the crease They can't make saves They use too many forwards to kill penalties I hope that paints a pretty good picture for why we suck on the PK. This. I'd say that pretty much covers it.
Theophany 110 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 our problem is we dont clear the front of the net. we have the softest D in the league when it comes to clearing the garbage goal oppurtunities. lilja i feel is missed terribley for this. lidstrom, the best defensemen to ever wear the winged wheel has never been a good defensemen in front. he isn't physical, along with the rest of them besides stuart, and little bit of kronwall. osgood can't stop the 5th rebound, nor can any other human. The bolded part is where you're blatantly wrong. Lidstrom wouldn't be considered one of the best defensemen to ever lace up skates if he couldn't clear the crease or at the very least lock up people on the crease. Please don't try to assert things that are the opposite of the truth.
titanium2 867 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 I don't really get it either. What has really changed since 08? Nothing having Hasek and Chelios make that much of an impact?
Taylorov 37 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 They are horrible at getting the puck out and clearing their crease. But it is absolutely maddening sometimes how they cannot seem to do one of the most basic things and just flip the puck out of their zone. :flamingmad:
Guest Lidstromboli Report post Posted November 25, 2009 they've been a lot better at clearing the puck out of the zone lately
Johnny Law 15 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 We're not aggressive enough, not enough intensity, too many guys just standing around. It's painful to watch. x2 Plus I can't remember the last time I saw a Wings pker use the 3rd dimension and just flip it over their heads when they are stuck in the middle of the ice and are trying to clear the zone. Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 (edited) Tonight will be a good test. Atlanta is deadly on the PP. Maltby back in the lineup while Eaves sits. I really like Eaves and he is +6.... second on the team...... but Helm and him were on the two PP goals against in the last game. If Ericsson is going to be with Lidstrom, he needs to lay the body on any guys in front of the net. I agree with what someone said earlier..... the defensemen can not try to play like Lidstrom on the PK and stickhandle their way out of a jam...... they need to take the body.... play the body, not the puck. JSUT ONCE I would like to see someone get knocked on their keister in front of the net when the puck is there. Edited November 25, 2009 by Icesurfer
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 I think every problem the team has can be chalked up to Chris Osgood.
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 Similarly, the Stuart-Ericsson pairing was out for both goals last game. Lidstrom's been extremely effective on the PK this year. I'd rather they dropped Lidstrom's PP time back a bit to add to his PK time just so they can stop the bleeding. The one sure thing in any one game is that Lidstrom will be dominant defensively. Just felt the need to corroborate with this with some raw numbers. Stuart and Ericsson are averaging the most PK time on the team right now, so it would stand to reason they would be on the ice for the most power play goals against, but compared to Lidstrom the numbers don't add up at all. Nick averages only a dozen seconds fewer PK time than Ericsson and about a full minute less than Stuart, but the disparity is obvious: 16 and 12 PPGA for Stuie and Rig respectively, and just 4 for Lidstrom. I realize in terms of the quality of a Dman there's Lidstrom, and then there's the rest, so perhaps this isn't as surprising as it might be if it was some other guy, but it's more reason I agree with you that Nick needs to see some more PK time, even at the expense of PP time (where he's not having a great start right now anyways). Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted November 26, 2009 Ken Daniels talking about penalty kill on pre-game. Basically he is pointing to the bad faceoff win % on PK and Osgood is 38th in the league in save % during the PK and Howard is 55th.
Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted November 26, 2009 Atlanta telecasters said it was the most passive penalty kill by Detroit that they have seen ALL year long from anyone. And allowed Atlanta easy entry into the zone and the rush in almost led to goal.
BlueMonk 102 Report post Posted November 26, 2009 It's just very poor. They don't excel in anything, really. They don't block shots, don't win battles to loose pucks and don't take away the shooting lanes. And they have the worst, most limp-wristed clearing efforts in the league. The rare times they do start strong, they finish weak. As I type these words, in fact, they did well for 1:30 and then let an odd man rush beat them.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted November 26, 2009 Atlanta telecasters said it was the most passive penalty kill by Detroit that they have seen ALL year long from anyone. And allowed Atlanta easy entry into the zone and the rush in almost led to goal. That's a fair assessment. The entire structure of the PK is horrible. The pathetic thing is that this PK medicrity (arguably) cost us a Cup and it's been going on for about 120 games now.
