There was also a superb goal Datsyuk set up in his rookie season, when he went behind the net, passed the puck to himself off the bottom of the net and then fed Hull for an easy one-timer. Boyd Devereaux, who was the third member of the line, said he was laughing even before the goal went in because he couldn't believe anyone could make that play.

Yes! The Wings used to have a video of that one on the team's site, but it has long since been down. That indeed is one of the most sick Datsukian Dekes ever. Mickey was going nuts over it. I'm 99% sure it was Boyd who got the pass and goal though. If anyone could find a vid of that one, it would be fantastic.

You are correct -- it was Boyd's goal. I found it and will have it up on Youtube later today, along with a goal he scored in the same game.

Here is a Datsyuk goal and the amazing assist against St. Louis from his rookie year:

And here is a Dats goal against Dallas from that same season:

Enjoy!

Thanks alot for these, as someone who has only been following the wings since 07, things like this are really cool to see.

Thanks, those are great! Yep, that is the goal (assist) the pass to himself off the back of the net, then pass through the players legs to Boyd. P.S. I hope you didn't think I was being snotty when I said the goal was by Boyd and not Hull. That wrist shot against Dallas between the guys legs - sick! That's the thing about Dats - he makes guys look like absolute fools with those insane moves and I can't count how many times he scores with the wrister between some hapless D's legs. I think that's why he rarely celebrates a goal. It would be like rubbing it in - it would be too cruel. Also loved Panger quoting Yzerman about Datsyuk during training camp the first year.

I remember that rookie year so well. Every game you would watch him and just shake your head, "Where in the hell did they find this kid with these insane skills?" Another favorite of mine was in the triple OT SCF game against the Canes. Of course Larinov scored the winning goal, but Dats almost ended it earlier - he deked the living s*** out of three Canes and just barely missed on his shot on Irbe. It had the announcers going wild and they said he had "Gretsky like moves." On the same play they commented that Aaron Ward, D on the Canes at that time, had said before the game the absolute last Red Wing he ever wanted to face one on one was Datsyuk - remember, this was a team with Yzerman, Federov, Hull, Shanny and more and Dats was a rookie. Wow!

Not at all -- your memory is just better than mine!

You're right -- Datsyuk was absolutely unbelievable in that game. He had at least five prime scoring opportunities and was IMO the Wings' best player that night.

Since we're tossing wild Wings plays up in this hizzle, how has "Do a Barrel Roll!" not made an appearance yet?

I don't know how it didn't make the list. Like they said, it isn't much less impressive than AO's goal. I can't believe I had forgotten about it. It just goes to illustrate that it's impossible to put together an accurate list like that spanning such a long period of time. No matter how many people you have doing it, something's going to be left out.

I agree. This is the best play posted in this thread and I think it truly deserves a spot in the top 10 decade list.

The larger problem with the video is that the decade isn't over until the end of this year! New decades start in years that end with a "1" not a "0", because there was no "Year 0". The first decade was 1 to 10 AD, the 2nd was 11 to 20 AD, etc. The current decade runs from 2001 through 2010.

And yeah, I know that in pop culture we like to talk about things like "The 80's", but in terms of the calendar just like the "new millennium" didn't actually start until Jan 1, 2001 (the first being from 1 - 1000, and the 2nd being from 1001 - 2000), the 201st Decade doesn't start until Jan 1, 2011.

This is a common fact, but it's just easier to consider it a decade from 2000-2010... 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009... That's 10 full years.

Yeah, well a new decade is also starting every single moment too, so how about that? Huh? Huh?

That's what I thought.

:P
