Team Canada's "second team"

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Okay, Canada has so many solid NHL players, that I decided to make a second team, a squad of Canadians that unfortunately didn't make the national team...

Jason Spezza - Vincent Lecavalier © - Martin St. Louis

Nathan Horton - Jeff Carter - Daniel Briere

Michael Cammalleri - Brad Richards - Shane Doan (A)

Patrick Sharp (A) - Steven Stamkos - Dustin Penner

Dan Cleary

Mike Green - Jay Bouwmeester (A)

Brian Campbell - Dion Phaneuf

Stephane Robidas - Robyn Regehr

Brad Stuart

Marty Turco

Cam Ward

Chris Osgood

...Not a bad team really. I think the second team alone would be in medal contention. I'd cheer for this team too because it has 3 Red Wings on the roster :). So, what would your second Team Canada look like, and how would they do?

EDIT: I forgot to put Milan Lucic on there... So I would consider replacing him with (sorry) Dan Cleary.

Don't know about the goaltending. Ward hasn't put good numbers but he's behind one of the worst teams in the league. Roloson has been pretty decent this year playing for the Islanders.

Nice picks with Stewie and Horton. Horton is unbelievably under-rated.

Weber made the first team... other then that, it looks pretty darn good.

I knew I forgot someone... BOUWMEESTER. In my eyes, he would have been a starting defenseman on the actual team... So I just keep forgetting he didn't make it. I'll replace Jovo with Bouwmeetser.

Yeah about goaltending... I mean there are some big Canadian names still, but beyond the 3 that made Team Canada, the rest are highly underachieving. Canadian goaltending as a whole is slacking when you consider how many big players there are out there.

Another name that hasn't crossed a lot of people's minds... Simon Gagne. Hell, I even forgot about him when picking my second team. However, my roster doesn't have a spot for him... He is good though.

Well to be fair if he doesn't struggle with injuries(again) this year he very well could have originally replaced Bergeron on the first team.

Even our second team could beat Finland, Slovakia and Czech Republic so easily (barring some complete fluke).

And it would likely beat the US too.

Speaking of which, is it just me, or have the quality of players coming out of Finland, Slovakia and Czechoslovakia been declining?

Edit 2: my apologies, Czech Republic

And to add to that, my further apologies that this post came off kind of douchy. It was 2AM and I was mildly drunk. I do still stand by that statement though, however obnoxiously worded it was.

Considering you're mentioning a country that doesn't exist anymore I don't believe I'll take your post seriously.

 See edit.

My bad, the Czech Republic. And if you look at that team and honestly don't think it would have a very good chance of running through them, I don't think I'll take your post seriously.

Allow me to elaborate.

This version of team Canada's FOURTH line has a total of 55 goals.

Finland's FIRST line (which I'm taking to be M. Koivu, Selanne and O. Jokinen) combine for 34 goals. (I know Selanne's injured, but he's still not making up that difference to Canada's FOURTH line.)

Slovakia's does fair quite a bit better (Gaborik, Hossa, Demitra) but they have VERY little depth. Kopecky is on their freaking team. Enough said.

The Czech Republic (first line of Hejduk, Elias, Jagr) total of 25 goals from the first two, plus whatever Jagr's putting up in the KHL, similarly compares to Canada's fourth line.

Obviously you don't have to agree about the "first lines" exactly, but I think the point is quite clear.

And there's different ways to analyze the teams obviously. The goal scoring isn't the only aspect. But honestly look at the rosters and tell me why you think any of those teams could beat Canada's second team.

And why not throw in goaltending, Canada's biggest handicap on that team.

Since only one goalie can actually play, I'm going to stick with the starter for each team.

Finland: Backstrom, 0.908 save % (career 0.920)

Slovakia: Halak, 0.927 save % (career 0.917) I don't know if I find that indicative of how he'd play, he's a backup, but I'll give it to him, not bad numbers.

Czech Republic: Vokoun, 0.924 (career 0.916)

Canada: Turco: 0.908 (career 0.910)

Canada's not doing great there, but they'd certainly survive especially given the depth of the rest of the roster.

Depends on who's coaching that second team.

Maybe only slightly. We've never had any star players and nowhere near the best players either. Still, been able to get some good results. That's because having a good playing style and every player in the team executing that style of play perfectly.

That is a fair argument. There's no way of knowing how that would work out.

Finland does have this ability to exceed expectations, but certainly looking at it on paper, Canada's team here should be able to beat them. There will always be those intangibles that can change things though.

How sad for you. Czechoslovakia hasn't existed since 1992, kind of a big deal.

Oh and I'm not arguing against Canada's 2nd team at all, they would most likely be able to beat any team in the Olympics - on a good day even Canada's 1st team.

...yes and I fixed it. Let it go big guy. Like I said, 2am and mildly intoxicated. The underlying point of the post is still quite valid though (particularly as I did go on to later back it up).

Now maybe it's time for you to contribute something valuable to the thread?

Too bad, because talent wise, Czechoslovakia would likely be the best team in the tournament.

Someone needs to compile those rosters (I'm too lazy) to see what it'd look like. I bet it'd be one hell of a team.

Either you win or lose, there is no "slightly"

Have you seen Leino play?

You've got some problem with me? You clearly misunderstood my quote. The "slightly" was a comment about Finland's level of players declining. This has nothing to do with Leino. Leino isn't a typical Finnish player. You've got some issues.

Either your level of play diminishes or not, there is no "slightly" and I thought Leino would of played on the second team or no?

Why are you throwing Backstrom there as Kiprusoff is clearly the starter and has better stats? Besides scoring in the NHL is different than scoring in the international games. If you think that team's unbeatable, you clearly haven't a lot of international games. And you can't analyze teams based only on it's players as coaching is a huge part of the game.

So would you consider Babcock is not a good coach considering the play this season?
