What would you give up for Kovalchuk

Yeah, I mean obviously this is just speculation for the fun of it - but with the teams out there that feel they really need or want him, we aren't getting him from Atlanta for youngsters and draft picks.

Say he was willing to sign a long term extension in the area of 7 years, 49 mil - maing his cap hit 7 mil a season...

What would you be willing to part with - Please make it reasonable(we're not going to get him for Lebda and the ghost of Steve Chaisson) and keep in mind ATL's needs...

Although it would majorly bum me out to see him go (I am a huge Fil fan/supporter) - Filppula, Kindl and 2 1st rd picks...

no f'ing way the wings trade flip! he's starting to really get going.

but they would need to trade value to get a star like kovalchuk...

leino, kindl, meech, the rights to hudler (lol), and a 2010 and 2011 1st round pick

assuming he signs for a manageable cap hit,

filppula, ericsson, prospect, 1st rounder, + one more pick

other teams can beat that pretty easily.

Exactly, its going to take a top 6 forward, A top 4 d man which Ericcson could be as soon as next year and a 1st and probably a 2nd rounder. although the closer it gets to the deadline the less teams will be able to give up for Kov, Waddel doesn't want to lose this guy for nothing !

I don't think it's insane. That's quite a bit for us to give up, although many teams can beat that offer. Also, if someone were to post that on the Thrashers forum, how many of them would even know who Kindl is? My guess is very very few.

i didn't know that the thrashers fans were also the GM of the team....pretty sure atlanta has a GM and scouts that know full well who kinkl is. they may even have a minor league team that plays the griffins multiple times a year.

those are depth players that aren't getting a great chance to showcase what abilities they have in detroit. like quincey, they might do better playing in a place where they can be on the ice for more than 7 minutes a game.

Try going back and reading what I commented on. He said, "Try going to a Trashers forum and propose that." My point is, how many posters on here would know Thrashers prospects and vice-versa. Not many.

Edit: Clarity.

It would be a tough bargain, but I'd give up E_S_A_D and/or mindfly so this team can get Kovalchuk.

Would anyone give up Helm, Howard and Filppula (or Kronwall) for Kovalchuk? Cause that's what it's going to take.

What playoff team is going to give up their best young player on the team, starting goalie, and a top 6 forward or a top 4 defenseman, none of which who have reached their prime?

Rafalski instantly negates any crediblity to the trade proposal. He is still a good player, but is overpaid and on the decline. The only teams that would ever be interested in Rafalski would be a cup contender with still some cap room who needs a good pointman on the powerplay. Atlanta is not the aforementioned team, and they will not trade a top 5 foward in the game for a 36 year old offensive defensemen who is getting paid 2.5 mill more than he is worth. Also he has a NTC.

I cannot see the Wings offeringa deal that would fit both our's and their desires, however if the Wings do make a trade it is going to have to include either Filppula or Kronwall. Both Can help the Thrashers in the future and present, as well as being signed to a relativily low cap hit. I personally think Kronwall will be invaluable in a few years post Lidstrom, and is a Wing for life.

Filppula is on somewhat of a scoring streak right now, and his value is most probably higher than it will be for quite some time. I get a lot of flack on here for "hating Filppula" or apparently not realising he is as good as he is. Trust me, I get the kid has potential, but I do not think he will ever reach the level of play many think he can. In my mind he is the only logical fit in this situation. His salary works well, and he does have the talent to develop into a 70 point two way player at his peak cieling (I for one will doubt he will ever consistently eclipse 60 for more than a 3 year span, but either way he will be a great 2nd line center no matter what), signed for 3 mill a year with 2 years remaining. I can see Atlanta being interested in him, and the Wings moving him for the right price/

Other than Filppula we would need a good surrounding package. Atlanta is in the playoff hunt now, and will not trade away their top player unless they also get somewhat compicated in the now.

If Cleary did not have a NTC I would move him also, for one his salary is too high (for his role on this team, though I have no doubt in the right setting he could be worth much higher than that) for us and would help the Thrashers offset the loss.

Since I doubt they will ask him to waive his NTC, our only other valuable bargaing chip that would help them currently that they would actually be interested in would be Ericcson. Ken Holland will simply not do this, and so no trade will happen. I have no doubt if the Thrashers were havinga poor season and werent going to miss the playoffs anyways their would be mild interest in a Filppula, + top end prospect (Tatar, Smith, Kindl) + 2 1st and a 3rd but that is simply not the case. The wings do not have the assests to fufill their needs and demands.

I think that's his point. Nobody would.

I could picture L.A. being the Playoff team with the best chance. I could see both teams jumping for a Dustin Brown + 1st + mid prospect for Kovalchuk. Or maybe if they got Frolov extended they could try something with him? Idk their current roster that much but I can see them pushing hard

If Kovi has told the Thrashers there is no way I am re-signing here then the Thrashers basically have to take the best offer which means they will seriously get screwed. That being said getting anything for Kovi will make them happy. Atlanta pretty much loses all say in what they will accept for the guy. A team may get him for a high pick and a solid young player. Atlanta is SOL unless a huge bidding war begins which I don't see happening.

 If the return is a guy like Kovy Holland would gladly ship Filppula out of town. He's "untouchable" in most senses but it's not Lidstrom untouchable. Everyone can be traded (see: Gretzky).

This is the correct answer. Although I do enjoy a good "what would you trade" thread to show just how out of touch with reality some people are.

I agree, however I think part of the disparity comes from the fact that there is a big difference between "what would you trade" and "what would it take." What I would trade would definitely not rise to the level of what it would take to get Kovy. There are too many other teams that are much more desperate for his services, have the cap space, and are willing to overpay to bring him in.

While I like Brown I do think you're overvaluing him a bit there. It'd take at least two roster players. Plus Dustin is a fan favourite in a marketplace that's only tenuously embraced that team...
