Western Conference standings

Am I reading the standings correctly? We now have 58 points in 8th place; the Avs are in third with 62 points. Furthermore, I believe the Kings, Predators, Canucks and Coyotes are beatable. And in spite of the Woe is the Wings crowd. I think things look promising because our boyz are playing better and more aggressively. There. I laid it out there, and I'm glad, did you hear me, GLAD!!

The top 3 seeds belong to the division leaders ... unless we catch Chicago (not happening) the best we can hope for is 4th place, and we are currently 5 points back. So yes, it's within reach, but then it seems like we've been within 1-2 points of the 8 spot for most of the season, and we only now actually got it ...

This team needs not to depend on other teams falling apart. They need to get back to what they do best. I don't necessarily see teams like Nashville, Vancouver, and Phoenix falling. I do see teams like Anaheim, LA, Dallas, and Calgary hanging around causing a clusterf*** for the Western picture.

I don't necessarily see those teams falling either, but there's always a chance that it can happen. And there's always a chance that the Wings will pick up their end. What I'm saying is that I was pleasantly surprised to see how much closer we are to the top four than I thought. Last time I looked (don't really remember when) we had 52 points. I say things are looking up. And the crick in my neck is worth it.

The nice thing about finally being in 8th is that the Wings control their destiny. They don't have to count on other teams losing in order to make playoffs (as long as they're in 8th or higher anyway), they just have to win to stay there.

I think this is much better than trying to fight their way into 8th. And yes, we put together a good streak and any other team hits a rough patch we could rise quickly.

Downside is we could fall quickly, too.

But I see the Wings improving and I think they will be one of those teams that surge late in the season. I absolutely think 4th is within reach.

I don't mean to piss on anyone's parade, but the more teams you have ahead of you, the harder it is to jump ahead of them, even if it is only 4 points.

Those teams are all playing each other and getting points in those games.

If it was two or three teams ahead of us, it'd be more manageable, but this way, we probably need to win 10 straight games to wind up in 3rd or 4th.

Huh? All the Wings have to do is win regardless of what everyone else does. It's not like all the sudden it will take 100 points to make the playoffs. Historically 90-93 points is enough. If the Wings get say 95 points, they are in. Guaranteed. Forget the other team, just win most of your games....

Yeah, but there's still a good deal of hockey to be played, including a couple games against those between us and 4th.

Guys, this should be simple. Win enough and the Wings are in.

Forget the other teams. They are not all going to win all the games.

And the only way to finish 3rd is to win the division and that is not going to happen.
