Yeah, I must say it's time to part ways with the Joe. If signing a small short term contract with the Palace means we're guaranteed a new dedicated stadium, I'll gladly take it.

That article is sooooo true. I once took a nasty fall on the steps outside while leaving the Joe after a playoff game against Chicago last season. I thought I broke my arm and my hat fell off. Someone actually stole my hat but my arm felt better after a few coney dogs at Lafayette. I'm only 5'10 and I have a hard enough time fitting into the rows. My dad is 6'5 and he has a such a hard time fitting his legs into the rows that he got his season tickets in the folding chairs so that he has enough room. I personally can''t wait until they have a brand new place to play at, but don't get me wrong, I love the Joe and I'll miss the hell out of it. So many great memories there.

The seating is the worst part of Joe Louis IMO. The seats are small and not comfortable whatsoever. I hate sitting with people on both sides because I'm always touching the person next to me no matter what and am extremely uncomfortable.

I would love to have a new arena.

They need to get out of the Joe, but I think if they do go to the Palace it will be for more then just a year or two. It's going to be hard to get a new arena built in these times, especally when the Tigers and Lions just got new stadiums as well. I think that if the Pistons are going to move back downtown it may be easier to get the arena deal done.

The "smells of the game" are no different than any other arena in the NHL.

As for the Palace, Holland has already stated that the Wings will be playing at the Joe next season. Hopefully, it will be similar to the Penguins situation, who are playing at Mellon while their new place is being built.

So who is going to pay for the new arena?

Ilitch? ..... he probably could but would hesitate to do it. But doesn't he own a giant plot of land right by the Hockeytown Bar?

Owner Mike Ilitch wants the city to build a new arena downtown.

From The Detroit News: http://www.detnews.com/article/20100126/SP...r#ixzz0dp11ndyQ

With the state of the City of Detroit's budget does anyone think they can justify paying 300+ mil for a new arena? Public funding for sports team arenas not really envogue right now.

Not really liking where this is going.....

I am making a declaration, right here...

I will sit through the Joe for 1 more year and then I am done!

Following the '10-'11 campaign - I will not go to another Red Wings game until they are in a new arena... officially breaking my 25 year streak of going to at least 1 Wings game a year...

It is way past its prime and needs to go...

I don't think you need to worry...Rumour has it the Red Wings will be playing at the Palace starting next season.

DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland scoffed at a Detroit News report suggesting the team is engaged in discussions with the Detroit Pistons about either relocating to The Palace of Auburn Hills next season or collaborating on the construction of a multi-purpose arena in downtown for both teams.

“I don't know anything about that,†Holland said three times to similar questions.

The information in the report was attributed to unnamed sources but did not include quotes. Further, there were neither confirmations nor denials from Red Wings or Pistons officials regarding the rumors.

The Red Wings still haven't renewed their lease agreement at Joe Louis Arena beyond the current season and might be forced to make as much as $10 million in structural repairs to the building, according to the News' report.

It also suggested the Red Wings might be better off playing at Ford Field next season.

In response to where the hockey team will play its home games in 2010-11, Holland didn't flinch.

“Joe Louis Arena,†he said without hesitation.

I don't believe it - the Palace is a HORRIBLE place for hockey (caught a couple Vipers games back in the day) and it just doesn't make sense... I see them extending the lease year by year until a new one can be built...

"During Saturday's game, a woman stumbled trying to navigate the steps in heels. She caught herself, did a half spin and was on her way."

Seeing how I'm at most of the games all year I love this line. You always see some skank in heels and her best hooker outfit trying to walk up or down the steps.

it says in the article they would likely sign a 3 year lease if going to the Palace.

Even though Holland denies any deal with the folks at the Palace is in the works - it makes sense (and for what it's worth - Mickey claimed Lilja would be back soon - yet Holland dismissed that as well).

I've been to the Palace once; it was for a Pistons game 18 years ago...From what I recall it reminded me of the United Center in Chicago; nice place but not meant for hockey since you're so far away from the ice surface.

It'll be a temporary solution until a new arena is built...I don't see Ilitch spending his own $$$ to do patch work on the Joe in order to stay for a few more years, but then again I've been wrong before.

agreed. especially since he will still have to pay for leasing the building on top of the $50+mil for repairs. That would make no sense. Who knows though, maybe it just wont work out with Palace Entertainment. They don't have to agree to give the Wings such a short lease.

The Joe isn't that bad as it is. While I agree that a new stadium is needed, I don't agree with the rush to leave the Joe within the next few years. A new stadium is probably 5-10 years from completion, and I don't see a problem with staying at the Joe until then. Moving from one imperfect situation to another is not a great idea IMHO. See this article for reasons the Wings should not move to the Palace. In addition to his reasons, the possible fan loss from Windsor is an issue. http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2010/01/a_...t_the_supp.html

They got the new Yankee stadium built in 2 years...

When there's a will, there's a way... and although I don't agree on putting one up over night and paying an insane amount to rush it either, they could do it in 3 years easily...

I think the Palace would be a horrible idea, even in the short term, especially to pull them out of Detroit... I think they should just use the Joe, as is, for 2 years and start construction on a new arena NOW...

Guest Howard He Do It?!

When they do build a new arena they better not make it a giant airplane hanger type building. A nice retro hockey barn would do nicely. This is hockey, not football.

I think they need to really capitalize on the opportunity here - build a nice, hockey barn feel arena, which holds between 20000 and 25000 people, lower level luxury suites and upper level luxury suites, but with tiered levels, so the second level basically sits OVER the first level, making them all feel right on top of the ice

Then - build an awe-inspiring concourse with plenty of stands, concession stands, bathrooms and maybe even an actual restaurant or 2 inside...

then, the real kicker -

Make a 20000+ car ATTACHED parking structure with shuttles to and from the Casino.

This will make money for parking for Lions games, Tigers games, Red Wing games, concerts, etc AND will bring more money into Illitch's casino by the shuttle and easy accessibility

They own the land behind the Fox to make this happen... if they chose to, it'd be great for the city, the Illitch's and THE FANS

Agree pretty much with everything except I don't think there'll be any more than 19,500 for hockey (maybe 20,500 max), and I wouldn't be too surprised if the Pistons were involved as well since there won't likely be much support in the form of tax $$$, or corporate sponsorship as we've seen in the past.

This is why there are rumours of the Red Wings playing in the Palace for a few years; it'll potentially be the start of a joint business venture between these 2 franchises.

I'd be fine with them sharing the Arena, as long as it was a Hockey First arena(meaning the ice gets a protective layer and the court is raised for the Pistons) and IN Detroit... I do not want them in the Palace prior to that though...

I agree that it can be done, but I don't realistically see a new rink being built within the next 5 years in Detroit. I hope I'm wrong, but without plans, guaranteed money, etc. I don't see this being a priority for Michigan and the city of Detroit (unfortunately).

If the Joe is a dump, I wonder what MSG and the Islanders rinks look like. I haven't been to the Joe in a long time, is it really that bad? (not sarcasm). As for the people complaining about the seats, its the same problem in new stadiums/rinks. I went to Ford Field for a Lions game and I practically had to be shoehorned into one of the seats.

I would love to see a new rink built. I just don't think it will happen in the next 3-5 years.
