The Secret 304 Report post Posted March 1, 2010 Sounds like an over payment for an under achiever especially not knowing how he will fit in with the team after only 7 games played... what's going on in Calgary? I think the next head that should roll in Cowtown should be Sutter's!
Feldmarschall 9 Report post Posted March 1, 2010 It's risky. Stajan's shown some 50 point potential even in Toronto with its piss-awful forward corps over the past couple years. He could settle in and become a consistently high performer, or he could stick to 30ish point seasons and waste lots of money. I'd have given him more than a seven game audition before throwing a four year deal at him, were I in Sutter's shoes.
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted March 1, 2010 I live in the Toronto area so I've seen Stajan play a ton and despite his production this year I gotta say this is a complete overpayment. The kid has a lot of determination at times and he definitely tries hard but he is so soft and can't shoot the puck. In my opinion he is a third line centre in this league on a good team and 3.5M is way too much. Maybe I'm biased against him but hey, it is what it is
superstarsingh 23 Report post Posted March 1, 2010 Yikes. That is a lot of money for Stajan. I am with mmamolo on this one, too much for a third liner. Living in Toronto, I have seen a lot of him and have never been impressed. He has always been described as an under achiever.

Like even this year, which has clearly been his best, I wouldn't be content having paid him $3.5M for his contributions. That being said when you sign a player to a new contract you're putting faith in him and assuming he will continue to grow as a player but Matt Stajan has never realyl shown a steady consistent rate of growth at the NHL level to garner that type of money. This contract reminds me of the Blue Jackets signing Mike Commodore to a $3.75M/yr deal. It's just a flat out over payment for a guy that although has his moments just doesn't bring it consistently and just isn't worth the money.

Yep, they are going on his age and that he may have some upside left. Even so, 3.5 for him is a gross over payment. He is just there. You could watch several games in which he plays, and not notice him. Commodore sort of merits a contract like this more so than Stajan. Commodore is, or was great at what he did. He can shut guys down and hit. He also won a Cup so I guess you could argue that he knows what it takes to win. Commodore sort of reminds me of Stuart (upon circumstance). Serapth 3 Report post Posted March 1, 2010 Has somebody bodysnatched Sutter? This is not a Sutter style contract. Too much money, way too much money. It could work out, but then, they probably could have signed him for easily a mill yes a season.

I completely, 100% agree with you on Stajan but whole heartedly disagree with you on Commodore with the exception of the Stanley Cup part. To me Commodore's dificiencies far outweigh his positives and has always been one of those bubble defensemen that's too good to be a 5-6 pairing but not really good enough to be a 3-4 pairing on a top tier team - at least not for the long term. Maybe I'm biased against the guy. I'm willing to admit that he does bring a ruggid punch to the team but he's not the quickest guy out there. It brings an average amount of offensive production but nothign special but to me he gets exposed all day long against the premier offensive talent where as a guy like Stuart (as you compared him to) at a mimimum always has a fighting chance against the elite of this league. But hey, that's just my opinion.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted March 2, 2010 I'm probably one of the biggest Stajan fans around, but this is way too much. Especially after only 7 games with the team.
