creedie 2 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 I have been asked numerous times what a redwing is and why the logo - I never really had the answer. This morning I did a little research...the logo came from the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association who won the first ever Stanley Cup in 1893, they were also known as the Winged Wheelers. When the team was sold in 1932 to James Norris (a member of the MAAA) he switched the logo to its current format. He adapted the logo from the original MAAA logo. I can assume why he chose the name Wings from the MAAA team name, however it is unclear why Red. Just curious if anyone knows the significance of the color. It could be so much that it was his favorite color or maybe there is something more. Thoughts?

Guest micah Report post Posted March 19, 2010 http://proicehockey.about.com/od/history/a/red_wing_origin.htm Yup. the Wings wear a "borrowed" logo from a Montreal team and the "red"part has no significance whatsoever, except that the team's colors as the Falcons were red and white. They are not named after the Red-Winged Blackbird as some have suggested.

Miss Wing Queen 154 Report post Posted March 20, 2010 The "Red" is because the uniforms for the Falcons were red and white striped, and they decided to keep the same color scheme. It also has its basis in the history of hockey being played originally on ponds, where the red would show up more easily against the snow and ice (white).
