I remember listening to a pre-game show when the games were broadcast on WJR; it may have even been when Bruce Martyn was the play-by-play man. The special guest that night was Mickey Redmond. A caller phoned in and asked if there was going to be an official retiring of Mr. Aurie's Number Six. According to Redmond, plans were in the works for it to happen. I sent the article to my uncle and he remembers seeing it on display the Olympia. This also reminds me to check during by HHoF Resource Centre visit this year to see if they have it.

Interesting story I stumbled across today:

In 1937, I think it was in February, Larru Aurie's dog was stolen. So not only did he break his leg (or his ankle, depending on the day and the news report) after leading the NHL in scoring up til that point but he also had his dog stolen. What a crappy year for him, eh?

Retiring his number should be done the right way. Not like this .... Illitch is the owner and its his decisoin. Whats a petition going to say to Illitch that he hasnt pry already heard before.

Illitch is probably the greatest hockey owner and seems like a great and reasonable person so I'm not attacking him at all - but a franchise attaches itself to the community and the fans; Illitch should not have the sole say over something that existed long before him. I think the petition is a good thing for those that disagree with his position. I don't know why "due to popular opinion" would not be "the right way" to retire his number.
