Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted April 17, 2010 So Bettman's possibly opposed to sending players to Russia for the Olympics, but it's ok to send two whole teams/trainers/coaching staff/etc to Russia to play the KHL?

McAwesome 754 Report post Posted April 17, 2010 As long as it's not part of the pre-season or regular season schedule, I say why not. I say send the SCF teams to play their champ and runner-up, and have them send 4 other teams here to play our bottom 4 (Edmonton, Toronto, Florida, Columbus) just so we can say that our best beat their best and our worst beat them too. Might discourage some players who were thinking about jumping ship, let them see how much better the hockey is in the NHL by direct comparison.

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted April 18, 2010 Excellent point. This kills any argument he had other than money. I think an NHL v KHL match could be justified because the exhibition is much shorter than the Olympics, however perhaps most importantly it could possibly sway some KHL players into realizing that the NHL is still the league to be in, thus bringing more skill(and thus money)into the league. Guest CaliWingsNut Report post Posted April 18, 2010 (edited) If you think the NHL playing the KHL is a good thing your nuts. This gives the KHL way more creditability than it deserves. It's an attempt to steal away some of that Russian cash, but he's lowering the whole league for $ Edited April 18, 2010 by CaliWingsNut
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted April 18, 2010 So Bettman's possibly opposed to sending players to Russia for the Olympics, but it's ok to send two whole teams/trainers/coaching staff/etc to Russia to play the KHL? Bettman is using the Olympics as a bargaining chip in CBA negotiations. If he gives public statements to the effect that he's against going to the Olympics, then he can use that to the NHL's benefit when it comes to the CBA. For example, Bettman agrees to go to the Olympics if the 'PA agrees to some other concession. It's all a big chess match. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Bettman is very willing to go to the Olympics.

It will be the first NHL hockey in Russia in 19 years. ... Only on Versus!
puffy 97 Report post Posted April 18, 2010 I don't really like this idea. The KHL is just trying to save face after the embarrassing performance at the Olympics. This just strikes me as another "My wee-wee is bigger than yours" war and it's unnecessary. Keep our players here and focused on the NHL season ahead during the exhibition. Don't distract them with a Cold War wannabe rivalry.
