Hal Gill penalty watch thread

Before the start of the Montreal - Pittsburgh series I wondered how many penalties Hal Gill would get for interference now that he's playing against the Pens, not for them. I guess I have my answer.

Game 1 - Holding

Game 2 - Interference

Game 3 - Holding

6 PIMs in 3 games. His PIM total for the entirety of last summers cup run? 6 ph34r.gif

That's precisely the point. We've seen him up close and personal in the finals, committing interefence on virtually every shift, yet getting only 3 minors in 20 odd games. I think he had 1 minor in the Washington series. Now he's playing against the pens and suddenly he gets 3 minors in 3 games.

Now, where did I leave my tinfoil hat.....

Well if you remember, the refs barely called ANYTHING in the Finals last year. I mean, the Pens had 6 guys on the ice for almost 30 seconds and nothing was called. Very bizarre. But I do find it interesting that Gill has 10 PIM in 4 games against the Pens while he recorded only 6 PIM during the entire '09 playoffs.

Isn't he out when Crosby's line is out? Maybe Crosby's just outworking him.

Hmm, yes, that must be it. Crosby is the only player in the last 6 playoff series to outwork Hal Gill.

Honestly, Gill has looked a lot better than I thought he'd ever look. And as for Crosby outworking him , look at Crosby's numbers. I'd say he's done a great job at containing him.

Game 4: Two more minors, holding and slashing. Wow, Gill has become really undisciplined since he left Pittsburgh eh? rolleyes.gif

Did you watch any of the game or are you just looking at a box score? I didn't see the holding penalty, but he deserves about 5 or 6 to every 1 he gets called for. I did see the slash and it was one of those hacks across the stick where the stick breaks. I can't remember the last time that wasn't called a penalty, it's almost automatic now.

I do find the Montreal crowd extremely annoying about not getting calls. Every time one of their players falls down, the crowd is looking for a call and are very loud about it, even though they seem to be diving around more than any team I've seen (Sharks included).

There was a part where I just had to shake my head though. A Canadiens player ended up fighting for a puck with Crosby and his stick broke in half and the fans just lost it...looking for a call. Why was there no call you ask? Well, the Canadien player slashed Crosby and broke their stick on him. So while the fans are losing it looking for a penalty call, they should be thankful none was called against them.

I'm probably being harder on Montreal because a few of my friends are Canadiens fans and I think they need to be brought back to reality. I rarely, rarely watch them play, but they truly are diving around more than I have seen from any other team (all teams do it these days, but they are the worst).

Crosby only has 3 assists, 8 shots, and is +/- 0 in the series. Gill is a +3 in the series and leads his team in the playoffs. He has also blocked 49 shots so far this playoffs. In comparison, Stewie leads the Wings with 18. Say what you want, but the guy knows how to use his big body. How many goals have the Wings given up this playoff season from not clearing out the slot?

It's amazing to me that Hal Gill has survived the "new NHL".

This pylon interferes on every shift if you watch him closely.

As Mick and Ken were saying last night "...if you ain't cheating you ain't trying". You've honestly never noticed the way Nick holds his stick out in front of him parallel to the ice to slow down the forechecker on dump ins? Or all the cute picks the Wings set in the offensive zone? The closer you watch, the more they all interfere, set picks, slash, crosscheck, and do all things illegal. As professionals their job is to know where the line is and play up to it and over it when the referees allow it.
