I hate Phaneuf but I'd have to say he's the best hitter in the nhl.

where has he been since preseason of last year?

Andy Sutton is my top hitter, others among my list are:

Douglas Murray

Brooks Orpik (Even though I hate the guy)

Mark Giordano

Matt Greene

Ed Jovanovski

Dion Phaneuf

I've noticed the lack of love for Giordano. He had some great hits last year.Rock solid defenseman.

True, Giordano broke out last year, but i could only remember so many honorable mentions

I dunno, but last season I seen Ohlund come up with some huge hits, one being on Zetterberg :ranting: which im sure everyone here remembers as it injured him. Heres just a few vids of massive hits he had last year.

Even with the Canuks he has some massive hits also.

yeah ohlund is a guy i probably should have put maybe before guys like backes and robidas, he's a solid hitter, so is his new partner Kubina.

Where is Brown, Volchenkov?!?!?! Whta kind of list is this s***???

Clutterbuck and then Boychuk...

Sutton - give me a break...

oops, forgot volchenkov, brown has totally sucked as of late, he doesn't hit hard anymore, he would rather devote his game to diving

And this is a solid list imo minus the volchenkov absence

and here is clutterbuck answering the bell

Where is Dustin Brown?

I voted for Clutterbuck. For his size and the fact that he's broken hit records despite playing on the 4th line, makes him an amazing hitter. He broke Brown's record, but Brown plays a lot more minutes than Clutterbuck.

exactly the dude doesn't hit like he used to, still hits alot but I haven't seen him clock a guy in a long time

I just can't believe Clutterbuck isn't winning this easily, when you consider how little his icetime is, yet how many hits he dishes out.

The other guys on the list play more frequently than him, yet still don't get as many hits.

well the sutton factor would be he completely erases guys form existence ala scott stevens, before this year started it would have been clutterbuck for me

this isn't even the full representation of sutton this year, he had about 30 hits that were as big as any of these

I don't see any correlation between "best" hitter and "most frequent" hitter. I would say Scott Stevens is the all-time greatest hitter in NHL history and he was far from the most frequent hitter. He just made them count. Phaneuf has been plastered with the "overrated" tag so much in the last couple years that people forget how devastating he can be and apparently nobody watches the Senators because Volchenkov is the modern Konstantinov...pure nastiness on rushing forwards.

NHL's best open ice hitter by a mile and hardly anybody in this thread mentioned him

agreed i owuld put him jsut ahead of stuey, I ALWAYS forget about volchenkov even though i shouldn't

then there is sutton who IS the modern day Stevens

It shows that Clutterbuck is a more willing hitter.

For instance, Kronwall can hit as hard as anyone, but isn't in the same league as Clutterbuck in terms of hitting, just because he doesn't do it as often. What good is it if he only lays people out once every 5 or 10 games?

A guy who always looks for hits and is very good at connecting with them is a better hitter than a guy that hits harder but doesn't do it as often. A 4th line checker's job is to hit all the time. Besides, his hits hurt and I've seen him lay some people out.

So I guess it comes down to what you define as a great hitter? The most efficient hitter? Or the hardest hitter? I look at both, and think Clutterbuck is the guy here.

Whatever happened to Hollweg. He played for the leafs and was a little ball of hate out there 24/7. He just kinda dropped off the face of the earth though lol

he was an epic ***** so he was ordered to serve in Gary Bettman's Evil Brothel

I agree with this here. Is Kronwall maybe a more capable hitter? Possibly. But he doesn't hit nearly as much as Clutterbuck so even if his hits aren't quite as hard, he still piles them up more then Kronner.

Cal should ditch the windshield and answer the bell on some of his questionable hits though..

That's my main issue with Clutterbuck and Kaleta. I hate when people get chased after a CLEAN hit, but if you throw one that's nasty you should defend yourself.

Also...

Dear Andy Sutton,

We don't have much of the dollar dollar bills ya'll, but please come to MoTown and mow down the competition. We will give you around 1 million, and allow you to sleep with Emma Andersson. Of course, we will have to ask Zetterberg first. I'm sure that being the leader that he is, he will allow this to occur because it is for the good of the team.

Signed,

An Unrealistically Optimistic Fan :yowza:

yeah like someone up above said he has to hit the body a bit more instead of glass, but if he plays like he did in the playoffs he could get into being a clutterbuck type guy. Abby also had a few big hits during the reg season, I don't think he is gonna slow down

I'm pretty sure that he will slow down. There is a difference between playing a season in the AHL, and then jumping into a NHL post-season, and playing a full NHL season followed by the playoffs. Look at Helm - he was nowhere near as effective as he was in the last two playoffs this year.

Clutterbuck and Kaleta are both pretty much the same player. And yeah I don't like Clutterbuck, a guy who throws hits, plays rough and causes some fights because I like to see fights? Great logic.

Its embarrassing the way guys like Kaleta, Cooke, Ott etc play when really 15 years ago they would have been killed in the NHL. Players like that who try to hurt other players don't belong in the game.

Hmm... This guy seems to be alive:

(watch the end of the video). And isn't there some other guy who stands behind the Phoenix bench who had a bit of a reputation for throwing foul hits? The list could go on and on. Cooke, Kaleta and Ott are not the first agitators the league has seen.

That's the 90's.... Argument is really things sure aren't like they were in the 70's or even early 80's. Those guys would in fact be dead as they stand on the ice for pulling this stuff. It is definitely something that needs to change. The floppers and "agitators" as you call them are growing by leaps and bounds and its nauseating.

There have been pests before yes but not like there is today. Pests back then knew their place better then today's do I think. Maltby wasn't known for hitting guys at the knees or anything, Ulf was but ask him about how that punch from Domi felt. Ulf was one ofthe few knee hunters at the time that wouldn't answer for his dirty hits.

The point I replied to said that there wasn't anything like that 15 years ago. 2010 - 15 is 1995. I can't really comment on whether people dove or not in the 70s and 80s as I wasn't born, but I suspect that those decades had their fair share of pests and divers (I mean, this was Sandström's prime!). It's easier to be a judge when you have HD replay.
