Because he has all the time in the world to make that reposition. Jimmy was in position to make the save and in a split second the puck was deflected and in the back of the net. Again, it's not that simple.

Sarcasm I do believe :hehe:

It wasn't that great of a shot. Bad angle, and Howard did not look like he was in good butterfly to stop it.

His body language after the goal doesn't help, either.

GMR: Filpulla has been giving them blocked shots. They have hardly had to try with Val taking up the role of shinguard assassin.

That makes sense with non-butterfly goaltenders and with shots that redirect from the point. Neither of those happened here.

The butterfly is meant to cut off those kinds of goals if done correctly, and Howard did not do it well enough. If it had deflected over the shoulder that is another story, but it went right underneath where his glove was supposed to be.

Yeah, Flip is better at passing first, but he did score a few goals in his last game.

Meanwhile, Franzen has one of the most accurate wristshots in the league when it comes to picking corners.

And the most important part, it was deflected.

Yeah, big change in direction there.

Oh wait, it flipped UNDER where his glove should have been. He misjudged it and it went in. Soft goal.

Don't worry, him letting in a softie doesn't mean he is the next Dan Cloutier.

His glove was where it should have been but then the puck was deflected. Pucks don't have to be deflected over the shoulder for them to be excusable.

I feel like I should be seeing highlights of the goals from the second period. Oh wait, it's Versus.

If the puck sneaks in on a non-screened shot like that, how can you say that Howard played that shot correctly?

Honestly, it was soft. Whoopdie doo.

It was deflected. A goalie can't reposition that quickly when the puck is deflected. It happens all of the time. If that puck isn't deflected and it still goes in, then it is a different story.

Decent game so far. The Filppula line sure has looked like the number one line so far this season. The second Avs goal was unlucky all-around. Miss-communication at their blue line, a lightly tipped puck that Howard saves 80 out of a 100 times. Defense has been good minus when Kindl and Salei are out there defending our zone.

Third period should be interesting. Are we gunna play to win or play not to lose.

True that Howard has a chance to stop the shot, but when the puck is coughed up at the opposing blue line and the forward manages to get enough separation between himself and the defenders to wind up an aimed slapper from the nearer side of the circle and release it without disruption, you can't really pin the blame on the goalie.

If Howard was in butterfly correctly he wouldn't have needed to reposition. It went between his glove and pad. He didn't try to move his glove up to stop the shot originally, so I don't see how he needed to reposition based on where the shot deflected.

Besides, the puck went like 2 inches from Duchene's stick before deflecting, and the puck didn't even change direction all that much.

Soff.

Nobody is calling Howard out in regards to season play like they did Osgood last year. But that goal could be a momentum killer, especially after all the sustained pressure Detroit had in their zone. Hudler first starting it off and Howard being unable to stop a shot between his glove and pad.
