Bruins' Paille suspended 4 games

NHL.com article, with video of the hit

Looking at the video, it did look like Paille got more of the head than the shoulder, so a good call as far as I'm concerned. This is the 4th suspension for a hit to the head, the other 3 are Shane Doan Oct 17 (4 games), Thornton on Nov 4th (2 games) and Matt Martin on Dec 8 (2 games).

Sawada would have seen him if his head was up, that is why i hate the grey area in this new rule, can't you just look at it and examine it isnt the same as Cooke's hit and be done with it

Exactly, it was east west but Sawada was skating east west as well. I'm all for this rule but not letting players with their head down get off the hook.

How bout you just hit him in the chest and not have to worry about anything? Vladdy and Stevens didn't have a problem doing it and Kronwall shows you can hit hard without going directly for the head.

If Stevens was in the NHL and doing those hits now a days he would be suspended. He usually caught people that had someone back checking them while he went east to west.

it didn't look like he targeted the head any more than stevens or konstantinov did

From TSN:

While Boston Bruins head coach Claude Julien accepts the four-game suspension that was handed down to forward Dan Paille for his blind-side hit on Dallas Stars forward Raymond Sawada, he's not terribly happy with the circumstances of the incident.

Julien told ESPNBoston that he feels as though a great deal of the responsibility should fall on the shoulders of the player getting hit to avoid putting themselves in a dangerous situation as they attempt to draw a penalty.

"Until the players themselves in their minds think about stopping putting themselves in vulnerable positions, whether it's playing with your head down or whether it's playing by the boards and seeing you're going to get hit and turning your back, or whatever the case may be," Julien told ESNPBoston. "I think if the players start taking that responsibility it's going to minimize a lot of these things."

Julien went further, stating that the ability for a player to protect themselves from danger should be engrained a long time before reaching the professional ranks.

"Once you're in the pros, you've been told for many, many years never to play with your head down, so if he hasn't learned by now, he shouldn't be in the pros."

...

I'll save everyone the effort: Julien played 14 games in his NHL career.
